I have the plug in RTAS version which I use inside ProTools.
It is an excellent pitch and timing correction program, much more versatile than Autotune, since it will give you a notated image of the track you are working on, and individual notes can be moved in pitch, time and changed in volume and duration.
It is even possible to copy a vocal line and change the notes to create a harmony vocal.
The next version will include Direct Note Access, which will allow you to work in the same way on polyphonic tracks, changing individual notes within a chord.
It is not available quite yet.
That is the upside.
However...
The latest version of ProTools includes Elastic Pitch functions.
PT 7.4 already has Elastic Time, so if you are planning to upgrade to ProTools 8, you may be getting all the functionality of Melodyne without any more expense.
As far as I know, the Elastic Pitch will only work on monophonic tracks. I have found the Elastic Time function to be absolutely superb, allowing not only quantisation of audio, but all of the functions normally found in loop creating programs such as Recycle- adjusting a sampled drum beat to play in a different style, tempo and groove for example.
In summary, Melodyne is excellent, but you might not need it.
Cheers
