This article by Malcolm Rockwell should make us musicians thankful that we live in a free world.

I think this belongs in the "Humor" section! I think the whole thing's a joke, a fabrication, as a little study shows Baldur von Blodheim, the Reichsmusikfuhrer, never existed.

Much funnier would be his Schteilguitar playink rules...

You know...stuff like

You vil not play das notes vich are faster den der Schmeisser machinen gun!

I could go along with the no drum breaks longer than half a measure in four quarter time. Sounds reasonable.

I've seen similar wartime documents in Norwegian, in their original form - as absurd as they may seem, they were definitely for real...

10% syncopation and no Jewish-Freemason yells.
Klezmer-Masonic marches, played sitting down? That's jazz, all right...
I REALLY hope that's not real, although I know that part of it actually is...

i knew a german drummer who's father had been a drummer in the german army
he was one of the many drummers that paraded down the champ elysees
anyway, this guy would put on civilians clothes on week ends & go & play w: the french musicians in the latin quarter
it was called degenerate musik by the nazis
he had a great time until he was sent to the eastern front

This reads pretty much just like Henry Ford's thinking.

When the church ran everything the rules were way weirder than that. If you think about it there is nothing unusual about that list. Any absolutist outlook will have equally absurd parameters of what is acceptable. What is Real Jazz or Real Country music ? If you made a list of rules it would get goofy pretty fast.
And Donny, A quick google search doesn't reveal everything.

I don't think that I would have made a good Nazi. The music I play runs toward "hysterical rhythmic references characteristic of the music of the barbarian races and conducive to dark instincts alien to the German people", and the music I enjoy listening to, more often than not, has "Jewishly gloomy lyrics".
There are times, and this is one of them, that I can be proud of my Scotch-Irish, Native American, southern redneck heritage. (After reading what I just wrote I should also stay away from hard drink. It sure explains a lot of my behavior when I failed to heed the warning about strong drink)
Thanks for the post Roy and I would like to add my joy to the choir that Germany was unsuccessful at the world domination thingy, and forcing "the white man overbite" form of dancing on the planet.
