Topic: Coil Split Humbucker |

Hi!! I'm NEW to the Forum and was curious what you all think of lap steels with a humbucker that has a coil split switch? Good things? Bad things?
I'm looking at a few differnt models that have these as pickups...the Chandler Studio 6......the Melobar Copperhead....and the Fouke Industrial offerings.
The one coil split pickup I see most often mentioned is the Kent Armstrong M213.

It depends on the sound you're looking for. I have 2 lap steels with humbuckers/coil taps, one of which is a Fouke Industrial. I tend to play mostly with an overdriven sound, so the humbuckers sound warm and full, but I tend to split them for cleaner sounds, or if I want more chordal definition with a dirty sound. If you're playing mostly with a clean sound however, I'd go with a single coil for the sweetness factor.

I have three Foukes, one of which has a coil splitter. I like the setup, it provides for a lot of tonal flexibility. Both the humbucker and single coil settings sound really good. I also have coil splitters on several of my guitars.

With the right humbucker, split tones can be quite nice. An issue with some lower output HB's is that when split they can sound weak.
A neat split coil wiring setup in a 2 HB guitar is to use a 5 way switch.
In positions 2 and 4, wire it so it joins the inner coils of the neck and bridge and then the outer coils of the neck and bridge.
This gives a little more output and also gives you a humbucking effect to keep the noise down.
