I've been curious to hear more of Greg Leisz lately, especially pedal stuff. Can anyone recommend some essential listening?

I'm already familiar with Bill Frisell's Intercontinentals and Good Dog, Happy Man, and his work on the Mark Olson, Teddy Thompson and Plant/Krauss albums.

Don't miss K.D Lang's "Absolute Torch and Twang", which is where Mr. Leisz first came on to my radar screen... we thought she was country then, and she said Patsy Cline was her hero so... you might dig the vocals and fiddles too, BTW, she called her band the "Reclines" in those days.

Thanks, Chris! Any other suggestions, anyone?

I gave a listen to Eleni Mandell's 'Country For True Lovers' today. It's a nice album, and Greg's steel playing is STUNNING. Big surprise, of course.

Whiskeytown "Strangers Almanac" - http://www.amazon.com/Strangers-Almanac-Whiskeytown/dp/B000002RBZ

Or perhaps this version of "Return of the Grievous Angel" with Emmylou and Ryan Adams on "Sessions at West 54th" from around 10 years ago - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_ie8BDBSZs

There's lots of it out there.

Mary Gauthier as well as the "new" Eagles CD. Greg will be here tomorrow and I'll query him about new projects.

Anything with Rosie Flores! Especially her untitled late eighties album, and "Once more with feeling" ("Honky tonk moon" really rocks, no pedals though).

Heather Myles's "Just like old times" and "Untamed".

"Sweethearts dance" by Pam Tillis. Most stuff by Jim Lauderdale.

And not forgetting the weird but wonderful song "Curious soul astray" from k d lang's "Even cowgirls get the blues". And most other lang albums as well.

Here's another; GL is front & center on "I Make the Dough, You Get the Glory" by Ottawa's own Kathleen Edwards, which I've been hearing on CBC & Sirius 63. Don't know the album title, or whether there is any more of Greg's tasty playing on there.... Anybody out there got the album?
Just checked out the Ryan & Emmylou clip Dave M. linked us to... Cool Anybody recognize the other steeler? BTW that sure looks like Buddy Miller playing bass. I would guess this is a blend of the two singer's bands, no?

The song that springs to mind is Velvet Crush's cover of Gene Clark's "Why Not Your Baby". The end solo will knock your socks off every time.

Yes, Buddy Miller on bass and that's Bernie Leadon on guitar, I believe. This show was a companion piece to the Gram tribute album Emmylou did with all sorts of duet pairings. Chris Hillman, who was on the show, may or may not have partnered in the project---not sure.
I wasn't sure what you were saying about the 'other steeler' until I gave it some thought---would that, by any chance, be Skip Edwards on keyboards? Trick question?

The latest stuff that Greg is on is the latest Rodney Crowell and EmmyLou Harris recordings as well as the Allison Krause/Robert Plant collaboration recording of "Killing the Blues". Also not yet released is a live project with Bill Frisell by the name of "Disfarmer". Also on that project is Jenny Scheinman and Viktor Krauss. He is also on Sara Watkins' newest yet to be released CD.
From Wikipedia- "In January 2008, it was reported by Billboard that a new supergroup octet tentatively named The Scrolls (now renamed WPA) had formed. The octet is comprised of Leisz, Sean Watkins (guitar), his sister Sara Watkins (fiddle), Glen Phillips (guitar, vocals), Benmont Tench (piano), Luke Bulla (fiddle), Pete Thomas (drums), and Davey Faragher (bass). The group plans to have an album out by fall of this year.
Greg is off to Europe with Ray LaMontagne next week.

Hi Marc,
You probably know that Greg plays on only one track on the Country for True Lovers album, ( I think" Just Another Lonely Heart") and that Dave Pearlman plays on the rest but I thought it was worth mentioning.
As Jim said, the track "Killing the Blues" on the Plant/Krause record is great, and so is the track "Through the Morning, Through the Night". Real nice.
There's an older live version of kd's "Lock Stock and Teardrop" from the album Women Live from Mountain Stage that has a pretty cool solo section. I didn't think it was Greg but she told me it was!
And let's not forget a ton of Matthew Sweet records. There is some outstanding steel work on a lot of it but I can't remember exactly what tracks right now.
Also heres a little known gem. A girl named Amelia June has a really beautiful album with some great steel in a style that is distinctly Greg.
Oh! Also Victoria Williams!

Nice pedal, lap and Weissenborn work by GL on "Geronimo" Cd by Shannon McNally, as well as a co-write, I think on the title track. Great Lap and acoustic guitar on Holmes Brothers "Simple truths"

Greg plays some really good steel on Joni Mitchell's "Turbulent Indigo" and "Taming the Tiger" CDs, and can also be seen and heard on Joni's "Painting with Words and Music" DVD.

I believe that's Greg on the Jayhawks' Rainy Day Music, but I can't be 100% sure. Josh, do you know for sure? Either way, I believe it's only a few songs.

I think that it is member Steve McCarthy doing the pedal and lap steel honors on that but will check with Greg.
