A New Year's wish from Kay:

Quote:
To start the New Year on a Hawaiian note......with a little twist. I have previously introduced to the forums a few Krontjong tunes, some of which in my opinion lend themselves well to steel guitar. Here is a tune composed by The Tielman Brothers of Holland, a Dutch-Indonesian group who were famous there in the '60s. Originally a vocal, I have
tried to portray a "cross-over" with "Moana Chimes" influences coupled with the Krontjong style of guitar-playing. The Hawaiian-Indonesian cross-genre may be particularly resonant, as our new President-to-be spent some of his growing years in both these parts of the world. Played on West Coast C6th steel guitar, key of A.

Best Wishes for a Happy New Year to all.

Fantastic job, Kay! Very cool arrangement, and wonderful touch & tone on the steel. I wouldn't mind hearing more along those lines-- your "cross-over" was a super idea....also, not a bad way to set the mood for a New Year's celebration...

Very Happy

IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, GEORGE DE FRETES PLAYED WITH
THE TIELMAN BROTHERS IN GERMANY. IT SOUNDS LIKE GEORGE'S VOICE AND STEEL PLUS BACK UP OF THE TIELMAN BROTHERS. I PLAYED WITH GEORGE MANY TIMES HERE IN CALIFORNIA, BUT I NEVER HEARD HIM SINGING THIS SONG.
IT IS A REALLY NICE SONG. THANKS FOR SHARING KAY.
WILL GIVE YOU A CALL SOON.

The Tielman brothers had an innovative and distinctive stage style and as you will see in the link below, had a steel guitar ( Reggy Tielman) in their early days. They also featured in films. Too bad that in their later years they gave up the steel guitar. In their version of Mukwai Hula I can sense its absence although the vocals are beautiful.

Jozef, I am told by reliable sources that the beautiful falsetto voice in the vocal recording is that of Andy Tielman. It is probable that George Defreitas played with them...and Rudi Wairata did. The interesting fact is that they never visited Hawaii!

I know Andy for many years and saw him last June.
He never told me that he recorded a Hawaiian song with his brothers. Andy does sing falsetto and very popular with the Dutch Indonesian people. When he was here in the US we played a few Hawaiian songs at my house. Most steel guitar players from Indonesia never visited Hawaii but Hawaiian music was always popular in Asia since the 1920's. I will call him and ask him about the recording. I like to know if they did more than one song. BTW: I tried to open the original song again but no luck.

I remember tuning into Radio Indonesia in the 60s once a week for 15 minutes of steelguitar music. Hawaiian steel guitar music was popular then, but not anymore, so it is time for revival! Tell Andy that his voice is quite superb, if that was him...

Yes, that llnk keeps disappearing. Here is mine and it worked a few minutes ago:

There sre still a lot of good steel guitar players in Indonesia especially on the island of Ambon.
The best ones went to Holland and they were all of Ambonese ancestry like De Fretes brothers, Rudy Wairata,Coy Pareira and many others. Nowadays they play a lot of country music using the pedal steel in Indonesia. I was already listening to Hawaiian music
when I was 8 years old in Indonesia, way before world war II. "Keep On Steelin"
