Then I found out he was a drummer.

| An old aquaintece that I have not forgotten played with Sammi Smith inthe 70's recalls Willie Nelson's lead player trying to do this. He had other stories not unrelated to Mr. Legg's first reply. Don D. |

Yup, I do it; or, at least have been testing it out. I use a leather craft thimble. I have been trying it with certain songs where I need one more string that is out of reach with the bar. The only problem with is is it has very little to no sustain at all. It produces sort of a dull note; however, the note is still there.
I cannot use it with my chromed bullet bar. I have had trouble gripping the bar if I try using the thimble so, if I want to use the thimble I generally use my Stevens bar.
Hey, if it works it works. It even saves retuning for certain songs or to get to that unreachable chord.

That lead player must have been Jody Payne. Jody tried everything in his younger days. I ran around with him for awhile. He was always redoing his guitar for a different sound. He had a guy in Houston put three levers at the bridge so it would have a steel sound. Mix those sounds with a bad head and the tone was super! |

When i was first getting into steel i played fiddle with a very advanced steel player for his time by the name of Chuck Cladwell.He used something on two fingers of his left hand and noted on front of the bar.Sounded exactly like a pedal steel.I also saw him use two bars with his left hand noting with one in front of the regular bar.I tried that with no luck what so ever.
He was quite amazing and was in no way limited to country.Tracy |
