There has been quite a bit of discussion of late regarding the Jerry Byrd Frypan guitar.
I dug through the pile and located my "Certificate Of Limited Edition".
I didn't buy this guitar new, it was purchased by a Mr. Aime Nadeau in 1979. I purchased it through Scotty's in 1989.
The certificate is hand signed by both Shot Jackson and Jerry Byrd.
I thought you might like to take a look:

Erv,

That does a better job with when they were made. I should have looked at my "Certificate of Limited Edition" which is also dated 1979 (actually, the very same date of 8/29/79 which might mean more of when the certificates were signed). My guitar was sold to William R. Dangel. Thanks for posting that.

Al,
Do you remember the serial number of your fry pan?
Mine is a long scale model, s/n 25.

Hi Erv,

The one I lucked into is just two below yours - B-023. I tell you, I love mine. Is yours "autographed" on the back?

I bought my JB (short-neck #030) direct from Jerry, came with the certificate and autographed back plate. These guitars were supposedly "LIMITED EDITIONS" but Shot turned out the identical frypans with the SHOBUD name on them. I have the 10 string SHOBUD frypan which actually has a better p/u on it and much better tuning gears. As has been discussed many times on the FORUM, the horseshoe "magnets" were completely fake. I've seen a few of these guitars with the horseshoe removed...the (late) Sonny Nicholas being one of them. The 10 string SHO-BUD used the 8 string mould which placed strings 1 and 10 in 'outer space'...the neck was not wide enough for 10 strings.

George, how many of those 10 stringers do you think Shot made? What tuning do you have on it?

Well Ron, the serial number on my SHOBUD 10 string frypan is #021 which tells me he made at least 21 ten string models. I seldom play it as it feels strange playing the first string in outer space...just too many strings for the width of the neck ! As mentioned earlier, the 1st and 10th strings are both out in space. As for tunings, I have always, and continue to this day, been partial to the "E" format...E7th, E6th, E9th, E13th. On the 10 string I have G# on top and the rest include the 6th and 9th. It's a better sounding axe than the JB...must be in the p/u which is not the same as found on the JB models. The fake (JB) horseshoe was never a part of the 10 string which was good for r/h muting. But it was really a stupid idea to make a 10 string using the 8 string (JB) mould. JMHO Sad
