Because it makes me a chick magnet...

(Actually, because it can raise the hair on the back of my neck.)

Brings me together with each and everyone of you.

Mike. I'll e mail you a picture of my guitar. I love the color of your MSA. You couldn't find a finer instrument. I'd buy one just because Reece Anderson is involved. What a wonderful human being. BTW...hope to see you in Phoenix.

Dave. Didn't see the bodies. My timing was good for once. Dave, I've never seen you at a Steel guitar show. You really should think about going to Phoenix. Nice and WARM.

It doesn't hurt my fingers.

It's cheaper and doesn't weigh as much as an organ.

I can sit down through the whole gig.

I can rest my elbows on it.

At home it doubles as a shelf to lay stuff on.

I can just sit down and start playing it without tuning, and without knowing the key - just stay on one string and find the pitch with the bar.

Chicks come up and ask me about it - as an excuse to get the guitar player's name. :?

To me it's the sound, that hanuting sound like on Alan Jackson's "Midnight In Montgomery, The great John Hughey playing on one Conway's old songs. Or Buddy or Weldon cutting lose on a song. I play about
3-4 hours when I am not working or my wife has me doing the honey dos. I am just enthralled with it.
To me the steel guitar as I have said in other threads, the steel is a beautiful instrument. And to me what I get out of it is pure enjoyment. There has been times when I have played so pretty, that I have had tears come from my eyes. I guess I feel the song in my heart, People that have heard me play, say that I play with emotion. This one instrument that I can get involved with.

Okay, okay...what Tommy just said so nicely is the real reason. I'm stuck on that haunting, singing, shimmering sound. That other stuff I said above is just icing on the cake. :)

Besides that it makes me a more valuable musician, it has a, umm, special sound that is often extremely effective.

I haven't read any other replies on this post, but feel compelled to answer.

What is most important to me is, first of all, the sound of this amazing instrument.

Second, the challenge of comprehending the pedal steel and being able to play somewhat by ear.

Last, grasping and memorizing the theory that is involved in coming anywhere near close to mastering this instrument.
