This thread will probably be moved to another part of this forum.. I love my MSA... It got down to 22 below zero last night here in Sheridan. I work night audit at our Super 8 Motel. One of the water lines broke to one of the two water heaters about 5 o'clock this morning.. What a hell of a mess I had to clean up. Anyway, I went down to Ace hardware, brought back the needed parts to fix the problem.

Once I got that taken care of, I came home, set my sorry butt down and began to play my MSA; the one my dad passed on to me. I dug out a few tapes recorded of my dad playing this beautiful thing and I come to realize, just what a wonderful piece of machinery I'm playing. I could never carry my dad's guitar case.. Anyway, thanks to Reese and Bud Carter for such a wounderful instrument..

My dad's tunings were D9th on the top neck and A6th on the back.. I've horsed around with those tunings, tried B flat 6th for awhile because it fits in to the horn sections, jumped to B6th , and finally settled back down to C6th... I'm having a ball... That's how my day was..

Nap time...

I love my GFI Ultra D-10 and my Emmons. My Emmons is one that I got for Christmas in 1999-I was eighteen at the time and the determination just hit me hard. My GFI is a steel I bought before Christmas in 2004 and it's probably my best steel.

The one and only steel I'll ever own. When I decided to buy a steel I made up my mind that it'd be Sho-Bud or nothing.

I am totally amazed at my homebuilt. Despite the fact that it sits in my workshop that is heated sometimes, and collects dust from woodworking and aluminum grinding, it still performs great and gives me a great tone when I finally sit down for a break and play her. She never breaks a string.
This no-name guitar has been through the fire test believe me. I respect her tremendously. She has proven herself to be a good-looking, good sounding workhorse. I can never get over the fact that I actually built this thing as my first project and it sounds as great as it does.

Well John, I never ask you to love my steel.. I was just in an emotionally charged frame of mind kinda thinking how good my MSA sounded when I picked up the bar.. In the next couple of days, I'll post a picture of my beauty along with sound files and then you can judge whether or not I'm worthy of of playing my MSA... When you hear it, don't pick on me too much.....

Well, I can't claim the first comment, but for the second (and my second guitar), there were never more than two brands: Sho-Bud and Others.

This is my baby. Me and my exgirlfriend broke up over this guitar. She wanted me to stop playing and spend more time with her and I told her some words and she decided to leave. Oh well though, I still got one person (or guitar) in this world that loves me. Sad

Well I'll be! Glad to meet you, Bill. What is your sister's name? My Alta May might know her. Decker is still there, coal trains running through here every night... Oh hear that lonesome whistle blow....

I hired on at the Pad Lock Ranch the first season I come over from Cody and cowboyed for awhile. Got saddle rash the first week running them cows out of the hills right above Dayton into Ranchester. Bet you remember that, don't ya... Hee...

Well anyway, My sweetheart was born and raised down in Clearmont and she taught me a lesson or two. I'm happy, she's happy with me, we have a bunch of cool kitty cats, a boatload of birds, and a deer or two in our back yard..I just got off the phone with her and she told me there are 5 deer in the back yard tonight...

I love it out here, Bill.

P.S., It warmed up out here... It's up to eight below Cool

I have played Shobuds all my life. I have a Super Pro, A Pro II Custom, and an LDG. The 'Buds just feel like they were built to fit me. I have played Emmons and many other brands on occasion and most were very nice and sound good, but the sounds I like to hear from a steel guitar come best from a Shobud. Mine are all tuned to Chromatic D9th and standard C6th. The "D" neck being bit lower and "stringier" in pitch, hardly ever breaks strings, and the pedals and knees work with the most minimal touch. I must add that many that other brands all have their own noticeable merits as well. Shobuds just give me the most of what I am looking for in one package. Regardless of what brand each of us play, I have to say a steel guitar is the prettiest thing I have ever heard in my life, bar none. We are all blessed to belong to this minority group of musicians. Respectfully. Happy Holidays. Zeke

That's fantastic, Zeke. You love your guitar(s)...
There is no question that Buds are awesome. What fits you is just fine. My dad had a couple of Buds, one of the same models you speak of. My dad had a pro II and he loved it. My dad was a big time fan of Sho Bud guitars. Then came along Reese and Bud Carter. Dad had to have that guitar, tonal reasons ,or whatever, or maybe it was emerald green. Besides, the mechanical issues suited him. It suits me just fine, too. Kind of like wearing a pair of pants that fit. Anyway, just like you, the most beautiful sounding instrument I have heard in my entire life is the steel guitar.

And I'm a piano player; go figure.

MSA Rocks!!

The only guitars I ever truly loved were my Sho~Buds. The rest are just tools of the trade. I keep going back to the 'Buds. I cherish the one I have, and mourn several that I have sold. And I'm still searching for that special LDG.

I Just want to re-stress that I am NOT knocking any other type of guitar. I have heard players on cheap little no-name guitars that made me want to quit playing, and others on big name guitars that made me think they should quit.(and vica versa). lol. Steel builders have come along way in quality and they are all very respectable guitars. Guess I just meant to say Shobud fits ME the best, physically and tone wise. That's all. My respect goes out to all steel players because I know all the trials we face. We are a rare breed. I am proud to be one of the brothers in this specialized field. Happy Holidays to everyone here at the forum. Zeke

Ric, My sister's name is Pat Brown, married to Stan Brown. They own Stan Brown construction. They have a lot of rental houses in sheridan.
I know the Padlock well, my mom and dad use to work there to. Ann and Ted Dobkins, also a family friend from here, Virgil Center worked there to.
Nothing like living in a line shack and rounding up strays up at timberline.
