From an article about the swimming baby on the cover of Nirvana's 1991 album...

Quote:
"If you'd asked one hundred Sex Pistols/Ramones wannabes how F-B-flat-A-flat resolves, one hundred of them would've told you it goes to C, duh. Kurt [Cobain] knocked the world on its ass by choosing D-flat instead," wrote Time's Claire Suddath.

Excellent. A theory thread!

The operative word is "resolves" which I don't think is correct. It really is a riff, harmonised in 5ths, ie power chords, that repeats after 2 bars.

Not to divert from Nirvana, but my wife and I have been playing 'Rehab' by Amy Winehouse, and it's got a little change that goes from Em to Am to F then to Ab and then G.

it's real fun to pretend the pedal steel is a horn sectionjavascript:emoticon('Rolling Eyes')!

I agree with Guy that "resolves" is not the right term, although not for the same reason (I don't see any problem with talking about "resolution" in the context of power chords). The Db maintains tension and delays resolution. That's what makes the progression interesting & what keeps the song moving.
