I'll be picking with the Riders tomorrow night(Sat 7/26/03)at Freight & Salvage on 1111 Addison St.in Berkeley,Ca.
No - this is not the "New" Riders - this the "Old" Riders. Peers and contemporaries of The Sons of the Pioneers,Gene Autry and Spade Cooley, this band was started in 1936 by the last surviving original member, the legendary 81 year old Buck Page who still fronts the band on lead guitar and lead vocals. Jerry Garcia co-opted the band's name only because he thought the original group which he idolized, was long dead or disbanded.BTW,the "New" and "OLD" Riders co-existed w'mutual respect and no hard feelings for years and even played on the same bill a few times.
Virtuosic multi-instrumentalist Cody Bryant on fiddle, mandolin, banjo, vocals and some of the best western swing guitar you'll ever hear,Mike Ley on bass and vocals,Landon McCoy on drums, and yours truly on steel and vocals round out the current lineup. I wasn't sure I'd feel up to making this job cause I'm draggin' ass due to my ongoing cancer treatments but I'm doing a little better this week and and it means a lot to be there with the guys,so I'm flying up tomorrow just for the gig.
If you like 1940s-50s West Coast cowboy music w/phat vocal harmonies and great pickin,c'mon down - 2 shows, first one starts at 8:00PM. -MJ-
