I'm finally getting around to switching a couple of levers on my Fess U-12 8+8---there was an ergonomic conflict with my 8th string E>D lower when it was on LKR---my 6th string G#>F# lower on LKR#2 (front) caused me to make contact with the E>D lever, no matter how I set it. Caused me to set the lever in a position that discouraged its use----bad situation considering the importance of the E lower. Anyway, with the E>D lower now on RKR (which is where it is on my super minimal Pro 1 S-12 and I kinda like it), I'm trying to find something else to put on the lever. I hate having a lever just pulling one string. It ain't natural.
Any cool or logical ideas?

Aw man--stupid me, sorry for not saying-----I tune my open 2nd string to D.
I actually originally had a second D>C# 2nd string lower on that E>D lever (in addition to having it on the E>Eb lever). It provides some versatility, splitting it from the E lever, but as is often the case, it also sometimes causes conflicts. I'm still considering keeping it.

I wouldn't mess with it. It is in the middle of the tuning and I can't imagine anything else you could put on that change that wouldn't mess up stuff above and below it.

Semi-agreed. And since I don't do the B>D raise, it IS my D. But still---I hate to waste the capacity for a change when there are unfortunate people out there with only one or two levers....my mama really drilled me with the finish what's on your plate with all the starving people in china thing when I was a kid.

Hard to know what to say without knowing the full copedent to tell us what else you have.

Do you have a lever to raise your 2nd string D to D#? I couldn't live without that D# somehow on there. I'm usually not bothered much by stuff both on the top two and lower strings. Otherwise, the D-C# you mentioned sounds reasonable to me.

Yeah--for sure, I raise the 2nd string D>D#. On two levers, in fact---the dedicated lever and also on the F lever.

The more I work on this the more I'm concluding that this needs to be a dedicated lever too. Every option I consider creates more conflict than reward.

Interestingly---I had forgotten why I got rid of the B>D raise on 9 long ago. It was originally on my 2nd string D>D# lever. Using the D# all the time took a heavy toll on the 9th string--I was breaking them at the same rate as 5th strings (not a lot but too much). But I now have a 'project' lever with a couple of changes that are very cool but are not used a lot and I'm trying the B>D there. I'm rediscovering why this is a common and useful change on U-12.

Have you ever considered going one gauge lighter on the B to D string? My wound strings on my 10-str. E9 are like this:
F# = .024w
E = .028w
D = .034w
B = .038w Raise to .036w or .034w Always use the gauge that corresponds to the string's highest pitch created!
