Here is a harmonized scale in Octaves. If you are not quite sure what to do in Open E/D, and you want to harmonize a melody note with "some other note", you can't go wrong playing octaves until you find your way back home......

Don't discount octaves too quickly. Wes Montgomery made a career of playing them in the jazz genre.

This diagram shows octaves played on either strings 6 and 4 OR strings 4 and 1. You can also play two octaves apart by plucking strings 6 and 1.

If you pluck open strings 6 and 4, followed by strings 4 and 1, you have the first two notes for the song "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". Have fun!
