On another note, there is a big void in the teaching industry left by the passing of Jeff Newman. The choice of songs and arrangements done by David are very close to what Jeff chose to teach. I see what David is doing as a sort of training grounds by asking questions, getting input.

Maybe I'm wrong? But hopeful.

It has been said -- in jest -- that Britian and America are two countries seperated by a common language. I returned this year from living in Tokyo for 20 years, with a few short breaks.

My best friend and picking partner there is British, and it took us a few years of playing gigs to truly understand each other. Toss in my Japanese wife and his Aussie bride, and it was a real cultural mix.

You won't find a kinder, gentler soul than Ivey-san. And the boy can flat-out pick, he is r-e-a-l good on dobro, steel and Tele. But maybe all the stuff the doctor's make him take these days gives him a different take on things.

I understood what he meant, and I know it wasn't meant hurtfully. We are all big boys here, so let's all lighten up and go change our C6 strings. That'll keep us plenty busy. :- )

David, most of us forumites can't wait to get your material.
Something to consider that may save time and money:

Have bulk shipments sent to Bob to put in his catalog,
so that it will save individual postage from the UK, and also some of the proceeds( with a small markup)could go to the forum.

You are a first class man, please keep up the good work. Never get depressed at what you are doing.

David, You are doing a great service for us all . Don't get discouraged by a few that don,t agree. The ones that don,t like it can turn it off. There are thousands out here that can use your help. I had a private session with David while in England last May.We spent the whole afternoon together in his studio,he had another "Rains" psg ready for me to play on and he showed me a lot of things.It was the most profitable private lesson I've ever had in my life so far.And David is a true gentleman.

David, you are an awesome player, one of my favorites! I definitely don't think your playing deserves to be categorized as "ok in a very basic way", I think you deserve better than that! I find your style very inspiring, and I hope to learn as much as I can from it. What you're doing is a wonderful thing, and may you prosper from it.

I've met David and I'll say this.You would have to travel a long way to meet a more modest and humble guy not to mention a top notch steel player - a long way indeed. I travelled some 150 miles a couple of months ago to hear him and the great John Stannard in a five piece band situation and I can assure you people out there that his back up playing is of the same high quality as his instrumental playing. A " how to play backup CD " would, I'm sure, be a best seller. I think his approach to gathering information on what players want on a instructional CD package is a sensible way of doing things. I thank him for his time and effort and hope he does well out of this venture.

Chris , can you post the where on this forum where David asked for praise..... I have met David and he never asked me to pat him on the back and say what a great player he is... As to your comment that Buddy gets ill with nerves before a show... maybe David has the same feelings before big shows like the Dallas steel show.. but David being a humble person won't let it show or affect his playing... Get that chip of your shoulder....We are very lucky to have a guy like David on this forum... I don't see Paul or Buddy or LLoyd putting videos on youtube to help the rest of us lesser players.. just to clarify my position and status on this forum, i'm a local 60 yr old player...playing for 30 something years. had a few good opportunities but no fame or pro status recording or otherwise gigs. i love the steel guitar.

a friend dropped off a cd yesterday that i played on a few tunes locally. google michael k. burke myspace his new cd 'we got twang if you want it'. on the site the first two tunes have me playing some simple dobro on the first one and steel on the second song (jam/jelly..whatever)..as representations of his cd. i never claimed to be a top steeler, and certainly wouldn't ask to be critiqued!

also..google vikkileepinecones myspace ..i'm on 'where did we go right' with vikki and albert.

i'm offering this information because i'm sure many of you would like to slam me.....slam away, my friends!

ps...i never take an amp to the studio and record direct to the board, leaving myself at the mercy of the powers that be!

Hey guys.
Surely this forum is about people expressing their views and opinions and as long as there is no personal malice or nastiness, everyone is entitled to their input. What David is doing is available to everyone to do. Yes he's probably looking to make a few shillings out of it and good luck to him. I'm sure by the response to his videos and tab etc, that a lot of people feel they can benefit from buying his CDs and DVDs and that is their privelige and right. Whether you think his playing is great or otherwise doesn't matter, because a lot of people do think it's great, and are excersizing their rights accordingly.
I happen to think he is an excellent player, has paid his dues, and accordingly I tip my hat to him.
I suspect I could have just said Ditto to Randy's remarks, but hey, it's a forum.

IMO Dave's playing is superior and I'm eternally grateful that he is sharing his knowledge. IMO we need teachers that set such high standards. I've been fooling around with the psg for at least 40 years, played with small bands years ago and can tell a lot of war stories. If I could come near to Dave's level of muscianship I would put it on You Tube. I can't think of any time that I have ever said anything negative about anyones' music here. There are different levels of playing as a friend of mine once commented, and IMO just because someone has done a recording, if it ain't selling like Dave's products do, then what difference did it make?

Chris you and I are within a few years of each other, me + a few! and i can remember about 40 years ago how i was starved for information on how to make some sense out of what i trying to do on the pedal steel. and now with the wealth of teaching aids available it has brought many a great deal of pleasure rather than frustration. Sadly the the greatest and most loved left us. Jeff Newman was and in my mind still sets the standard for all. David is simply carrying on a service that is needed to keep our beloved instrument in the hands of new and old players. The amount of work and dedication that goes into putting together a project like David is working on is a extention of what Jeff set out to do.and is deeply appreciated. (P.S. Chris i gotta run the prune juice is working)

I believe Lloyd did over 22 or 25K recording sessions and to my knowledge didn't tab any of his music. Remember when Ricky Davis thought he had Lloyds "ride" in the recording of "Remember When", and to find out that what he had done wasn't the way Lloyd did it after talking to Lloyd. I don't think that "Farewell Party" has been tabbed, to my knowledge, so I'm anxious to get Dave Hartley's tab of this song. Thank you Dave for doing this work. One other thing about what Lloyd did in that song "Remember When", he had done quite a few versions before deciding on doing the final cut.

of course they are many of Buddy and the rest of the top players on Utube but not put up there for the benifit of the learning steel players ,they are mostly long shots and very poor video quality, at least you can get a good idea of what David is doing with his videos....

I think David is one of the most talented players on this Forum and I love his videos.
Like David I only had the Winnie Winston book when I started playing over 30 years ago.
I also want to back up David's point about costs as I'm one of many who have teaching material on this Forum.
After recording time and tabbing time and materials and mailing costs we sure aren't in it for the money.
If we are lucky we might break even.
Just my 2 cents on that.

My daughter posted this thread for me, and when I reveiwed it, it asked for people to 'rate the video' ! This was edited, (as you can do when logged in)... I think Chris saw the original posting in the first few minutes and then made his comments.. I did find it amusing today..

I have just made this 'AMUSING' clip for youtube about the DVD coming soon.

I have a lot to do as yet but I think it will be a good learning tool for a few steelies, as I never had this sort of thing when I started playing..
