This computer is a Dell Dimension 2400 with 512 RAM and running XP Pro. The computer just quit recognizing the CDROMs. Error 39 comes up when I try to reinstall them. I have been trying the registry fix I found on the microsoft site but did not find the entries they said to delete. Any suggestions??? thanks winston may |

Check the power and signal cables on both ends for tightness. Check your Device Manager to see if the channel containing the CD drives has a yellow exclamation mark. If so, you need to reinstall the motherboard drivers.
The chipsets driving the CD drives could have failed.
The drives themselves may be electronically defective or too dirty to read a disk. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Registry "fix" is for the upper/lower filters and normally what fixes code 39.
HERE is the procedure from another site.
If the filters do not fix it, Here is the procedure to clear the "NVRAM" in the 2400:
"Reboot system and enter the BIOS Setup by pressing F2.
Turn on Caps Lock, Scroll Lock and Num Lock.
Press ALT+ E then ALT+ F then ALT+ B"
And finally if you are still having a problem, reinstall the Intel (motherboard) Chipset Drivers
HEREis the chipset drivers from the Dell downloads for the 2400. |

When you first boot up, it has nothing to do with Windows. What works or does not work with Windows is ONLY after Windows initializes.
Since your problem is ONLY Windows related, it's the upper/lower filter issue. If that does not fix it, I would suggest loading with the Windows XP and running the "REPAIR" option (when you load using the Windows XP CD, select the Repair rather than the reinstall option). |

I never found the upper/lower filter issues in the registry. I took the easy way out, I reinstalled winxp. Thanks for all your help. You ARE the DELL man. Winston May |

Too bad it took the reinstall, but sometimes it's needed. The Operating System and the registry are so complex and it may be able to be fixed but it could take months to accidentally come across the fix. The reinstall gets it back working right away. |

Winston;
Please run a manual check for Windows/Microsoft Updates, using Internet Explorer. download and install every available update, reboot as required, then go back and check for followup updates that will become available, until there are no more updates listed.
This is extremely important for your online protection! _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum
