| Not that surprising -- I saw him in Cuba around 1989 with a version of the Liberation Orchestra and he did a solo which was mostly quotes of fiddle tunes. I'm pretty sure "Boil them cabbage down" was among them. |

If you check Charlie's web site, I believe his first gig was as a kid back in Iowa playing bass in his family's country and bluegrass band radio show. A lot of water (er notes  ) under the bridge since then.
From "Bile Them Cabbage" to Ornette Coleman....It doesn't get more eclectic than that!!

I've heard a couple of tracks from this CD, the one that really sticks in my mind is a beautiful version of "Shenandoah" featurinh Haden on vocals, Pat Metheny on guitar (and possibly Jerry Douglas on dobro, not sure, it may have been one of the other tracks).
Definitely on my "must get" list..

This is a really sweet album. Nice arrangements of traditional tunes from Charlie's childhood, beautiful singing by his daughters, perfect non-flashy picking by some of Nashville's finest and, for the bass players in the audience, an example of how a virtuoso player who knows the importance of the song uses his skill to form a beautiful rhythmic and melodic accompaniment that never draws attention to itself. Some of the best country music I've heard in awhile created by one of the most notable jazz bassists of our time. Crazy, huh?!
