The first song I heard by Mary Chapin Carpenter was How Do. Who played steel and guitar on that one? Never cared that much for most of her songs, but that one had some good pickin.

I think Tommy Hannum did the steel work. Don't know about the lead player, but he was doing some pretty good stuff!

This is the personnel list from "State of the Heart":

Personnel: Mary-Chapin Carpenter (vocals, acoustic guitar); John Jennings (acoustic & electric guitars, piano, synthesizer, bass, background vocals); Peter "Tex Luigi" Bonta (acoustic guitar, accordion, keyboards); Mike Auldridge (dobro, pedal steel guitar); Tommy Hannum (pedal steel guitar); Rickie Simpkins (fiddle, mandolin); Kim Miller, David Premo, Bruce Myers, Steven Day (strings); William Zsembery (French horn); Jon Carroll (piano, organ, keyboards); Rico Petruccelli (fretless bass, bass); Robbie Magruder (drums, percussion); Shawn Colvin (background vocals).

I assume it's Tommy Hannum on steel and John Jennings on electric guitar on that one, but I don't know for certain. Whoever it is, they smoke it.

Strange this came up,I was looking at some old vidios I had taped years ago,Ran across this song on an old Austin City Limits show,The guitar solo was the best part of the song, used to rewind it several times just to hear it.[the guitar solo]DYKBC.

The guitar solo was John Jennings and I have to agree that he "smoked" it! He was MCC's longtime partner in music and one time boyfriend. What's strange is that he worked for her in different capacities. I remember one lineup she used where someone else was on lead guitar and John doing more rhythm and another one where he was the bass player, whatever he did, he did it well. Tommy Hannum's steel playing? It speaks for itself....JH in Va.
