I have a two month old HP Pavilion with Vista 64 bit.
When I try to play a song on Charles Tilley's site or the Forum or even my own site it brings up the page but when I click on the MP3 to play it I get this message. "Internet cannot display the web page".
I have gone through the Internet solution diagnosis page by page and tried all the solutions that they suggested with no results.
I have checked my defaults.
Also downloaded the latest QTime and that did not help.
Any ideas will greatly help me solve this problem.
Thanks

I've worked quite a bit with Don trying various things but he can't access internet MP3 media, it's not just specific sites, it's any site with MP3 media. I haven't tried a wav file but I suspect it will be the same with that.
I thought it was a Norton problem but Don has uninstalled Norton and installed different security software and it still has the problem.
When he clicks on an MP3 file, it comes up with a message that Internet Explorer can't display the page (I think that's what it is), basically it can't access the MP3 file or Windows Media Player can't access it. But Windows Media Player can access the web so it's not an access problem with WMP. I've compared his I.E.7 configurations with mine and they correspond. I've had him reset the Advanced settings, he's deleted temporary internet files/cookies, etc.
I need to go over to Don's house and actually sit down at the PC and try to figure out what is happening.
As this is a new PC, I don't think it's ever worked. I was involved with installing the PC for Don and I don't recall ever trying to access an MP3 from the Internet. |

Jack
You explained it much better than I could.
Like he said I don't think it ever worked.
I only came to notice it the very 1st time I went on to Tilley's site with this new HP.
Thanks Jack.

I found this very topic being discussed on a CNET forum and have pasted in the reply that solved it.

I had the same problem and finally got it fixed. I'm using Vista Home Basic. Here are the steps I used to get it fixed:
1.) Go to Control Panel, double-click "Default programs"
2.) Click "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" - takes a few seconds to load the list.
3.) Double-click the file-type under the "name" column (such as ".mp3"). It is probably showing something already, like "Windows Media Player", but don't believe it.
4.) Now you'll have a list of "Recommended Programs". Double click the one you want. I chose "Windows Media Player" even though it was already "supposedly" set to that. Again, it will show "loading" at the bottom of the screen for a few seconds.
It should now work, try again. |

Wiz
Thanks, it worked.
I have Vista Home Premium, but I'm all set now.
I also set mine to Windows Media Player and I'm back to what I had with my old HP with XP.
Thanks a bunch.

Wiz, I had Don check the defaults at one point and obviously it showed it was set for WMP and apparently it wasn't.
Good fix. |
