June 8th was a very special day for the "Deep South Steel Guitar & Musicians Assoc." Steel Guitar players from 5 different southern States came to Gulfport to play that evening. Jimmy Miller from Wasau, FL, who is the President of the Southeast Steel Guitar Assoc., played with his Carter Steel and did a fine job. Barney Miller from Atlanta, GA, one of the clubs favorite members because of his unique style. Larry Moore from Hampton, GA did a superior job playing his Emmons Le Grande ll. Bill Stafford from Gulfport, MS, played on his 14 string "Excel," Bill's forte was his "fat" chords. Bill has earned the title as "Mr. Smooth." Ivan Reddington came in from Florida and played some classic Hawaiian music from the "Jerry Byrd" (if you don't know who Jerry Byrd is please sell your Steel)! Ken Henderson was another 14 string player who loves to play steel and sing for the audience. RJ Buras, from Kiln, MS, played on his 14 string "Excel," RJ has been playing for 3 years and did a great job! Jerry Jaye, who you will remember as the singer from "Hello Josephine" played his "Emmons LeGrande" and sang as well, he is one of the Coasts most favorite players. Mike Brewer played with his "Midi" Steel and out came a cascade of different sounds. Hal Higgins, the President of the club played an "Emmons LeGrande" and gave an excellent performance.

The featured artist was "John Heinrich" from Nashville, TN. on his "Custom Excel" Hal Higgins wrote me: "What a pleasure it was to have John here in Gulfport for the 1st anniversary show of the Deep South Steel Guitar & Musicians Assoc. (DSSG&MA).
We have a lot of good things to say about John and his performances, as well. He's not just a musician....he's an entertainer. I say that because not only does he play
flawlessly, he takes the time to be a people person. John is one of the DSSG&MA's favorite players as well as a member, we're glad that he's a part of our organization."

Hal Higgins/ President DSSG&MA

Thanks, Hal for the great information.

Jane, thanks so much for all your wonderful words about our efforts here on the coast of Mississippi. We have a great time in this new organization. It was a great pleasure and priviledge to have John as our featured guest at our last session. This man's talents amaze everyone and his personality fits in with all aspects. I will be glad when the rest of the "steel guitar world" becomes familiar with John Heinrich. I really get a big kick out of the DSSG&MA members when they inspect the knee lever system John has on his D-10 EXCEL. They have no words to describe this mechanical marvel.
Just wanted to thank you for the wonderful input you gave us here on the forum. Best wishes to you in your work, and please stay in touch..

Hey Jane,
It was certainly an honor for me to have John playing sax on my set. He inspires us all to play better. I really enjoyed his set with him playing that steel guitar. It was amazing him doing much different chord progressions I've not heard of late except by Dr. Hugh Jefferies on his laatest album. It was truly great to hear and see John on that forward leaning D-10. We hope to have him back real soon. A good time was had by all.

Gotta jump in here and tell the world about the show in Gulfport. John did a fantastic job on "ALL" the instruments he played during the course of the day.

John has emailed me in regards to coming to the Mobile Show and from all indications, he is going to try and make it. Can hardly wait. It was a great day and show. And yes Larry, they beat the old man up pretty good. Felt like I had worn the fingers on my left hand down to the third knuckle. Sure was fun. Looking forward to seeing all the gang together again on July 26th. Man that sounds like a good song title.

We all had a wonderful time at the DSSG&MA show the first Sat of June....what a lineup of great steel guitar and other talent that performed for us as well. But the highlight was John Heinrich without a doubt...and we will certainly be getting John back here in Gulfport real soon. July 26th is coming more quickly that you think....It will be a great day, too......thanks Jane for your great comments and your support of the DSSG&MA. We certainly do appreciate it. HAL
