I posted over on the UK website that I think it would be quite novel and useful for you to do both on the same DVD. First do a concert/performance of, say, 6 tunes, then go into the tuitional (aka 'instructional' for those of us on this side of the pond) portion, show how it's done and maybe sell together with a tab book. I think that would be quite a unique product (and you should definitely ask more than 15 pounds for it.

This is great. I really appreciate your paticipation in my poll. I will start on a tuition DVD on Monday next week. I was thinking (and give me your opinions here please) of a DVD teaching, and tabbing Cold Cold Heart, Farewell Party (LG) (as close as I have got it (which I think is 99% right) and possibly Orange Blossom special....???????

Any ideas from you guys (and girls), would be welcome here. This is going to be a big project but I have assistance here in the UK from a steelie who has not found exactly what he wanted from a tuitional DVD (or CD) yet. I am a bit of a perfectionist and would like to know your thoughts. He is a good player too. I have ideas to play a song, start from basics, go to intermediate etc. on a featured song. I have had a few people come over for lessons, and I know its not always the technical steel guitar (whatnamacallits) they need but a little know how on how to make it sound sweet and expressional moves rather that technical moves..... I think you know what I am saying here.. I will talk and show everything from the techy stuff to what needs to come from expression and even from your heart and how to relax and play your steel making it sound how I think a steel should sound.

Please partake in my poll (but I can tell you its 100% for a tuition DVD, and I wont let you down, but at the same time I need to know exactly what exactly you would like on the DVD?

I REALLY am looking forward to doing this for you all.

Many reagrds to all of you, (and to those who send me so many nice comments on Youtube too (I reply to most of you with questions),

I would like to meet you all in Dallas 2009..

I was 50 on October 13th!!!!!!!!!!

You can buy me a Bud!

Ha!

Hello Dave. I like, (all really), Orange Blossum Special, Truck Driving Man, Sensuous Woman #2, and When You Say Nothing. I was just watching your DVD again, and I sure hope that these tutorial DVDs are in the same format; really amazing. IMO, you're one of the ultimate PSG musicians and I really like your ideas that produce the music I enjoy. I hope that you continue to tab your music; I love 'em all. I would really love to make a trip to Texas to meet you, but I have personal obligations here at home that prevent me from going very far. Take care my friend.

David, I wholly support your plans about the tuitional DVD.
I do have a request though: See if you can make room for The Blame. I know....the disk isn't big enough for everybody's requests...

Yes. Thats what I was thinking about too. The songs played through by me, then instruction with tab and tips, licks tricks will be included in the tuition etc.

I am starting work on this project on Monday and Tuesday next week.

Any more suggestions welcome.

David, I guess the difference I was thinking was for you to play all of the songs straight through, back-to-back, like a concert, and not have the tuitional part immediately after each song, but all together at the end of the last song. That way, one could just enjoy watching the 'concert' performance straight through, if one were not in a 'tuitional' frame of mind at the time, and could just think of it as concert footage. The watcher could sit back and enjoy a half hour of your playing, without having to jump ahead of each tuitional part to get to the next performance. Same content you were planning, but perhaps arranged differently on the DVD. That way, it might appeal more broadly to people who'd just like a DVD of your playing, and might not necessarily be trying to learn your material: they'd just watch the front/concert half of your DVD.

Dave, my opinion here, Is songs on tab really a great way to learn ? I think , [we] I myself are more intrested in mind, body and soul, Ala, Attitude, Practice ritual secrets, right hand dexterity, how to position the best to avoid cramp, pick blocking , tone exstraction, damping, backward rolls etc, marriage guidance, equal oppertunity and you know a little bit o flash! Confused
Just my opinion dave, there are hundreds of tab sheets already, and nobody is going forward just ripping off tab sheets, as you very well know, because your beautiful renditions are not tab ripp off's. One has got to think for one's self, starting with a single melody note, right? I'll bet you can make lots o money with both, you should two C.d's dave, think of the quids chap. Let me know when that C.D comes out! Laughing Laughing
Ta Ta for now mate.

David, When I started having lessons and you were fifteen I paid Gordon Huntley 20 quid an hour and have never regretted it, so your price of fifteen quid in this day and age seems more than reasonable to me for quality tuition. Smile

Thats the plug, now, I need you to work out a few solo`s for me?????Smile

Hi Dave, for what it's worth, if folks want to sit back and only listen to your songs, you have CD's or DVD's available already they should buy.

In showing how you're doing a song, the last thing they'd want to do, is to keep having to go way back to say a song in the middle, and then go back into the intruction portion. Just my opinion.

Also, regarding playing the songs you do, I don't think would be considered a starter course, I'd consider it probably more of an advanced course for ones who are more or less well along their way.

That is, unless you intend to have more than one learning video.. On which, you could in time, do probably many others. Some for simply beginning steel players, right on up the list.

I'm sure you'll figure out what is best for however you'd like it/them to be.

Somewhere, be sure to let them know the secret Very Happy to the way to get great intonation, and develope their ears, as they go.

I'm well beyond ever learning much of anything now, but I want to take this time, to let you know, that in my personal opinion, of years playing, that you are in deed, one of the best who gets the Rugg, Green and other's licks precisely as they were done, and with great intonation, all the way up the neck.

My hat's off to you, for being an outstanding player.

Don

i'd rather see what you do for yourself, rather than continually offering yourself as a servant of the learning masses....unless that's totally how you see yourself!
