...of course, it could be argued that we're all older now than the last time the question was asked. |

Plus, we have newer members now that might affect the numbers. Even so, I'm still old. |

I am older and wiser now since the last time this was asked, however, I am still younger than all the respondents up to now! |

Wow. Nobody from 0-20 and almost nobody from 20-40. That doesn't bode well for the future of the instrument does it? Makes me think of that old George Jones song "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes?"

Well I have NOT a clue what the "average" age is of forum members.
But I can say without hestitation that my age is NOT average, by any stretch of the imagination.
For I am older than dirt, but I feel like 31. Along with fulfilling, "Ve grrrew too soont uld, unt too late schmart!"
Now can you top that "whippersnappers"? Or should I say "Yungun's"?????

From the earlier poll numbers, the age distribution looked roughly like this, properly rounded to the nearest whole percent (note that the age intervals are slightly different from this poll):
Age ---- %
00-18 - 0%
19-38 - 8%
39-58 - 50%
59&up - 42%
So the new numbers should not come as any surprise. I think the political pollsters would say that any differences are "within the margin of error".
BTW - properly rounded, the percentages for this poll, so far, are
Age ---- %
00-20 - 0%
20-39 - 7% not 6%
40-59 - 53% not 54%
60&up - 40%
So it looks even closer to the old poll results. As far as the future of the instrument - my sense is that an awful lot of steel players started later than the typical guitar player, and frequently after quite a few years on guitar. So I'm not sure this demographic tendency indicates a big a problem for the future of the instrument.
The other thing is that the sample for these types of polls may be biased in favor of older forum members. Further, the sample of steel players who are members of this forum may be biased in favor of older players. I wouldn't draw any hard conclusions. |

Although there have probably been a lot of new players since the last poll, this one isn't too bad. But, it looks like the general percentages are running close to the old poll.
Almost all the Steelers I see working in road bands look young to me, maybe that's where they all are instead of on the forum?
If people would use the search feature they would find their question has probably already been asked and responded to. I've been on the forum basically since the start (when we all migrated over from the old AOL Steel Guitar SIG) and I see the same questions asked over and over, mostly (but not always) from new members. |

I'm 62 but my wife is 44. Does that count? I was born in 1931, so my average age is about 38.5, but my actual age is 77 so I am in decline.
I don't run 4 miles a day anymore, but I do walk for 30 minutes five days a week at my military speed of 120, 30" steps a minute, and I also work out with weights, so that keeps me in the game. _________________ "FROM THEN TIL' NOW" |
