Basic Useful scales to know

Post by Zeke Cory »

Rob. here are some basic scales that will help you up and down. I am assuming you want E9th. Use any major combination of strings to experiment on, such as 5 & 6 to begin with. -
5(AB)-8-10-10(AB)-12(AB)-15-17-17(AB) - (useful in whole or part, up and down)
Try this on strings 5 & 8 -
3(D)-3(A)-5(A)-6(AF)-8(AF)-10-10(AB)-12(AB)-13(AF)-15(D)-15(A)-17(A). Also useful both ways.
Remember the Hank Williams song "Take these Chains"? One way it can be played is using part of this scale, on strings 5 & 8 like this -
5(AB)-10-3(D)-3(D)-3(A)-5(A)-8(AF)-6(AF)-5(AB)-5.
Try these 2 and I hope it helps a bit. I have not written much tab so if anyone sees an error please let me know and Ill fix it. I will write out more scales for you if this is in fact helpful. Thanks. Zeke

Scales...

Post by Dick Sexton »

Jeff, Sorry I didn't get this to you sooner, crashed my computer and been down for a while.

Check these, they might be of some use: Beginners Notes #s 29, 30 & 41 also Beginners Notes: Some E9th Scales.

If you do a search for those on the forum you will find them or get them all by searching Beginners Notes Dick Sexton. If you need something in particular or in a certain key, e-mail me.

Another great resource is Joe Wrights DVD #3 "E9th scales and Mixing Movements.

Hope this is of some help,
Dick Sexton
