The "Ubuntu" LINUX is available either in 32 bit or 64 bit version. You can download it at http://www.ubuntu.com/
I've been playing around with the 64 bit version, loading it just from CD, and eventually will probably install it on a hard drive. |

I second the Ubuntu recommendation. Like Jack says, you can run it straight off the CD. It's slower that way, but it's a good way to play around.

There's other non-linux free OSes out there, but go with linux.
I personally use Arch Linux but that's not for a beginner unless you're willing to dive right in and you're comfortable in the shell (by which i mean what people call command prompt, dos prompt, command-line, whatever you like to call it.

has information on various linux distros and you can contrast and compare them there.
Try Ubuntu first. The forums are very good there, too. |

I gave up on Windows about 6 months ago after having to reinstall it several several times over the past year due to the tons of problems I was experiencing with it. Was seriously considering buying a Mac, but then I came across a book that I'd bought a couple of years ago that included a Ubuntu CD.
I figured what have I got to lose, so I installed a 2 year old version of Ubuntu on a 4 year old computer. It was a bit of a learning curve, but it's been as stable as a rock for the past 6 months. No mysterious reboots, no viruses, no addware, no malware, no spyware, no popups (all problems I had with XP over the years). Updates are a breeze. I'll never go back to Microsoft.

You can try calling Microsoft to see if they will validate your copy of XP, or else find a local computer store that still has a valid XP Professional CD with the hologram sticker and buy it to obtain a valid product key. After getting the valid key you should open the Windows Activation Screen (Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools) and use the link provided there to change the product code, then have it validated online, or over the phone.
Aside from paying for a valid license your remaining best option would be to format C, purchase a Ubuntu Linux CD and install it onto your blank hard drive. After you get Ubuntu running you should download and install WINE, so you can run some of your Windows programs on the Linux computer.
