'Birdland' played by Jan Jonsson at SteelGuitarJazz.com

Post by Jim Cohen »

We've just added Jan Jonsson's excellent recording of the Joe Zawinul/Weather Report tune, 'Birdland', in the Listening Lounge at www.SteelGuitarJazz.com Come on by and have a listen to this fine treatment of a great classic tune.

We now have over 50 steel guitar jazz mp3s in the Listening Lounge and over 35 jazz videos in the Video Screening Room, so if you haven't been to the site recently, there's probably a bunch more you haven't seen or heard yet. Just go to www.SteelGuitarJazz.com

And please do sign the Guestbook while you're there, and give us your feedback and any suggestions for developing the site further.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the nice comments! Yes, it sure was a labor of love ... and extremely fun to do. Earlier this year I had a conversation with a steel guitar colleague who suggested that someone should do Birdland on pedal steel. I first thought "no way, that's no doable", but after making some attempts to play it with my band, and being pleased with the sound of it, I took on the challenge.

This recording, as is evident, is not a live track. It is in fact only drums, acoustic bass and about of dozen overdubs with my Fulawka. No other guitars, keyboards or electric basses were being used. This, of course, leads to the next challenging task: how to arrange it for my four-piece band to be able to play it live ...
