It may be your log on account, even if your account has administrator priviledges. Log on using the Administrator account and then try the update. |

Joe;
Read my replies and see if applying them solves your access denied problem. If it does, please report your success and what action you took to successfully update your computer to SP3.
I believe this will turn out to be another "Ownership" issue, requiring logging into the actual "Administrator" account for resolution. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Tough deal. Despite repeated cautions cited in several tech advisories I subscribe to*, I blew it and installed SP3 on my XP Home platform.
Overall these cautions applied to certain models of HP desktops, so I blew off doing the more painstaking research on issues applicable to my own motherboard/ chipset /bios etc.
The "only" obvious problem I encountered after installing SP3 was that the formerly rock solid wireless connectivity I had enjoyed had turned into the matter of a very flaky crapshoot whenever attempting to hook up to my wireless ISP net.
I was fortunate that the SP3 uninstall routine ran smoothly without a hitch, and all has been well afterwards. So far.
I will be paying closer attention to such [now] obviously properly published information in the future.
* Windows Secrets/Langa List et al, TechRepublic, ZD Net.
I hope you can get it corrected without much more grief... Good Luck. |

Your user account is probably not set up as an administrator. Log in as one and it'll be fine.
I've heard of people having issues with SP3, but I've successfully installed it on around a dozen computers (some were mine, some weren't) and never ran into any issues. On some, the performance was better, on others, it wasn't. |

There was an initial problem with SP3 and HP's as many HP's use AMD processors. That was supposed to be fixed.

For a lot of people who encounter this, it turns out to be a registry permissions problem. In the linked thread, Wiz mentions one way of fixing it. Here's another:
http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/reset-the-registry-and-the-file-permissions-in-windows-xp/
Go with the first method, just paste that line into cmd.exe and hit enter. If it's a laptop, make sure you're plugged in. It can take a while. Also, don't do it when you need to use the computer for something else. Best to let it run on its own. |

I have just published a thorough web page about fixing Access Denied errors when upgrading to XP SP3. It contains details for manually correcting permissions problems, plus a quick-fix combination of a batch script and Microsoft download file. I believe my information will help all of you experiencing Access Denied errors while trying to upgrade your service packs. It is written about upgrading to SP3 but also applies to SP2. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum
