Other than, of course, learning their songs. Do they have any idiosycrasies I should be aware of? Really looking forward to the opportunity. At LCO Casino in northern Wisconsin.

I would suggest "not" mentioning the Phrase; " Grand Ole Opry ". A very touchey selection of words to use in front of Stonewall. Just kidding..Bernie

I've worked with both of these artists.
Stonewall is a Georgia backwoods redneck; dumb as a rock. Just nod and agree with everything he says. He can be a nice guy, but he has a complex about his upbringing. There was an article in the Nashville paper last week that said his lawsuit with the GOO has been resolved.
Wanda, as far as I could tell, seems to be "one of the guys", just cool.

| I saw Wanda a few months back with a local band backing her and she put on a good show. She does quite a few of her old hits in lower keys now so you might take that into account if you're learning from her records. |

Stonewall's been out of Georgia long enough that his English is pretty good now. Don't worry, no hillbonics necessary. I played steel for Wall for a bit. At that point he was still singing in the original record keys. Just learn the hooks and he'll be happy.
Wanda is very cool too, should be a low-stress gig and a lot of fun.

Wanda is a former Las Vegas entertainer. She used to really entertain and probably still does. Stonewall is very dry...Sings only his hits and usually has a problem with many of the audience getting up and leaving. I like both Stonewall and Wanda but there is no comparison when it comes to stage presence and entertaining. I have booked both her and Stonewall several times and have experienced what I just wrote.

Well, thanks all. Hillbonics, that's a goodun. When Hillbonics meets the accents of the North Wisconsin woods, I think an interpreter might be a good idea. Since it's at a casino, I'll probably "Just Have A Party." I love "Fujiyama Mama."

Sounds like a fun time!
Two great entertainers; Stonewall was a classic and so was Wanda Jackson. She worked with the late Hank Thompson and Hank was one of the first if not the first Country acts to work Vegas.
I would say keep it Country.
Well, I wish I had the opportunity to work with them like you.

I did an Opry gig in Weatherford Texas quite a few years ago and we had Stonewall on the show once. We did our homework ahead of time, but he sang most everything down a step from the record key.
I remember him being a very personable guy. He shows up in some sort of big car, Caddy, Buick.. I forget which.. and he's wearing an obviously brand new shirt because it's still got the fold marks on the front. He walks in and introduces himself to the band and hands the bandleader a song list... written on that white cardboard that comes inside a new shirt..
I loved the guy, he was a real pleasure to work with, and the show that night went great.

Well now, that's most definitely another plus for ya. The lady can still sing a great song. If it's pure "Classic County" you like, then it simply doesn't get any better, She's a Baby Doll.. Both she and Kitty Wells, are in another time zone when it comes to performing "GREAT CLASSIC" country music.

Michael...Back in the sixties I played drums on some shows with Jean. I was a terrible drummer and filled in just because a couple friends were appearing on the same show and recommended me. One thing I did find out as I was having trouble keeping time with Jean.........One of the musicians turned to me and asked me if I was watching Jeans hands which she held behind her back. I said yes and he said 'don't'. Jean had told me to watch her hands which I assumed was for the beat. Actually she was using the Nashville number system which really confused me as I was playing drums. Quite embarassing as Weldon Myrick was playing steel. That was about 40 years ago and I still have egg on my face.

Don't mention the word "mandolin" in front of Jean.
Let's just say it's her least favorite instrument.
We played a show with her and Del Reeves just outside of Philadelphia back in the '90's and she's a really neat lady.
I learned all the steel parts to the songs she was doing so I think she was somewhat pleased. If I'm not mistaken I think her husbands name is Ben too. |

Well, thanks again fellas, now that I got the right lady straightened out. I believe we are just going to be a 3-piece band backing her, so I'll probably be playing a lot of 6-string also. I hope she still does flash the Nashville Numbers behind her back, because I know them.

| if you've been hired to back someone like this, and they don't send a reference of the songs they do in the key they use ahead of time, they deserve whatever they get! have fun and do your best, but don't worry about it...especially if they're not! |

Hey, Terry. I was told by the bandleader that it was Wanda. Then I got on the website of LCO Casino and saw Jean Shepard, so I got that corrected. I will try my hardest to avoid a tail kicking.
