How many Keyless 12 string players out there?

Instruments, mechanical issues, copedents, techniques, etc.

Mike ,
I had a Milly for a short while ....I was waiting for my Excel to come from Mitsuo ....I know what you mean about the tone ....To me , it had an "acoustic" quality to it, a very "wooden " tone to it ( for lack of a better description ) It was very Piano like in tone ....I LOVED it ...
No other steel sounded like it ... I was almost tempted to set it up with open tunings so I could finger pick it like an acoustic guitar .....I think it was the Carbon Fibre that gave it that tone ....I've played other instruments that had Carbon Fiber in them and they had the same characteristics ....Jim

About a 10 year old Williams early 400 series 8x5 (6 levers at one time).

Natural blond laquer; single coil Williams pickup.

Very compact guitar; you have to literally squeeze into it, and carefully. But ease of motion and accentuation is what I'm after.

And, oh yeah, it sounds terrific. Sounds like a pedal steel guitar.

MSA Millennium, Legend, and Studio Pro, Reese's restored Universal Direction guitar, as well as some older MSAs, several amps, new and old, and a Kemper Powerhead that I am really liking. Recently added a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored blue Rose, named the "Blue Bird" to the herd. Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic again that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also added a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks.

Keyless U 12 String Excel

Post by Doc Rickles »

This is the most uniquely designed steel guitar and most comfortable and easy playing instrument I have ever sat down too. 25 1/2 scale with sustain that is unbelievable. It is mint condition and is 10 years old. The engineering and craftmanship is fantastic. Carl Dixon had this designed for him and it is absolutely an awesome guitar. Had a Wallace Truetone put on which brought it alive.
Carl was a prince to do business with, so helpful in sharing much knowledge with me.His new book, "The Evolution of the Pedal Steel Guitar" is also great for anyone, beginner to professional. Better get you one.

I played a Sierra keyless extended E9th for many years. First a Crown model, then a Session:

They are great guitars. I have no complaints at all.

Darvin, what kind of steel is that? I like the "O" fretmarkers.

My dear friend George Redmon plays the beautiful Whitney 12 string hand built custom steel guitar. He also has a new Williams 12 string keyless steel guitar which i gave to him as a gift. George plays jazz, western swing, and gospel mostly. His heros are Reece Anderson, Curly Chalker,Buzz Evans, Doug jernigan, Buddy Emmons, Hal Rugg on jazz songs, and Herby Wallace. Although it has been rumored that george plays a "Universal" tuning, i will lay that rumor to rest once and for all. George has never played the universal 12 string tuning. George is playing what he calls an "Extended C6th". He gets E9th sounds on the C6th neck, it's amazing how he does this. His top strings are chromatic. He uses both a high G and D string. His tone can only be described as mellow, and on the mid to lower side. No whinning crying high pitched commercial 9th sound here. I should know, i play in his band.

12 strings

Post by Jerry Knapper »

I have three 12 strings, two are keyless. One is a Sierra Session, One is a Westwind with a Sierra gearless headstock and the last is a geared BMI. The Sierra is my gigging steel and the Westwind is the "knockaround" steel. The BMI is up for sale.
