I've had an idea rattling around in my head here and would like some input on it. Some times when playing three string on a strum or a 1, 3 string note pattern when you have your bar on the strings it bridges clear across and you can't play lets say a fret open and fret strings. Has anyone come up with the idea of having dips or notches cut into one side of the bar that would allow you to turn the bar and play different variations of open and freted stings on the neck at one time. Has this ever been brought up or has someone ever built a tone bar like this/
thanks in advance. _________________ YOU CAN TUNE A GUITAR BUT YOUR CAN'T TUNA FISH!

There have been bars custom made with all kinds of ideas in mind, but the standard bar used with proper technique is what is generally best.
Sounds like you just need to learn to strum with the ability to skip the strings you don't want.
Depending on the extreme you wish to take it, this can take a lifetime to master. |

Maybe I'm just thinking to much like a lead guitar player who never played much chords and always single string runs and stuff. _________________ YOU CAN TUNE A GUITAR BUT YOUR CAN'T TUNA FISH!

Your idea reminds me of when I was 11-yrs. old and just starting out on the steel guitar! Listening to Jerry Byrd getting all those beautiful chords and phrases. I pictured him in my mind with a seperate thimble~like bar on each finger of his left hand and moving each one in a different direction to get those ‘complicated’ sounds. Come to learn, eventually that he was playing in either the C6 or C-diatonic tunings and there I was with a (A) high-bass tuning! A~C#~E~A~C#~E There's a slight difference there! Oh well, it would have l©©ked funny too! [One finger moving (down) the fretboard and three fingers moving (up)!] You'd need at least 4-eyes too! >crossed< _________________ <marquee> Go~Daddy~Go, (No), Go, It's your Break Time</marquee> L8R, jb

This may sound stupid but has anyone tried a thimble like ring on the thumb to sharp a note.........for sus 4ths for example? Trills?
I've been thinking of trying it but haven't had time to carve out something small and with enough mass to work.

I'm afraid to think you might be serious! In my case, can you imagine someone holding a steel guitar in his lap and picking with the fingers of his right-hand and also having the fingers of his left-hand going in all directions at the same time????¿¿¿¿ And keeping time (up & down) with the toes on both feet¡¡¡¡ Some people have a hard time just chewing gum and walking at the same time! _________________ <marquee> Go~Daddy~Go, (No), Go, It's your Break Time</marquee> L8R, jb

I'm a few years behind ya but it don't look good for the home teams. (yours or mine) My plan has changed so many times I can't keep count. Looks like I might be running a little guitar & amp repair shop out of the house when I "semi-retire" to make ends meet.
Take care Bud,
John,
I played drums as my first instrument. I can't help it!
All the best,

Might be easier to just play pedal steel! Or get one of those Duesenberg things. I think the can be made to either raise or lower. |
