We've all heard the sound of dead strings, but I usually associate those with the wound strings only.
Do you hear an appreciable difference in unwound
strings that have been on awhile (say, a few days) vs a few months or even longer?
I usually find I can get away with just changing wound strings but it could be a psychological phenomenon.
Your thoughts? |

|
|
I've encountered unwound strings that for whatever reason are DEAD and nothing can be done about it.
On the other hand, I'm still playing some original BIGSBY Strangs from 1956 that are still vital and sound great. I'd defy nearly anyone to identify on which neck they're installed.
I've NEVER changed strings........on a weekly basis and particularly not before a recording session or even a dance gig. That begs for a full night of tuning and retuning, I've found. But then again, it could just be ME. |

I never change a string unless there's a real reason to. I like old strings. |

Ron, I knew I liked you right from the start.
Have you had this 'thing' for olde strings for a long time? Is it a new chapter in your life? Does it ever trouble you?
Just kidding............ I too think that the older strangs ad something to the mellowness of the basic tone.
I was chatting with a fellow a couple of weeks back. He broke his second string on a lap steel. He rushed right out and replaced the entire set and was going to demand his money back for the 'broken strang'. |
