Topic: Looking for first Dobro |

Hi all....been playing pedal steel for a few months now...love it, and now I want to get a Dobro. Can anybody give any ideas for a good first "pro" Dobro? How are they amplified....internal mic or pickup? Metal body or wood body?....which one is louder? What would I be looking at spending for a great sounding pro model vs. a intermediate? Thanks for any advice!

What would you be willing to spend?
Think of it like walking into a car dealership. They may have cars that start at 15K and go up to 50K. You don't just say "I'm looking for a car" and your checkbook is open to everything on the lot, right?
A respectable quality dobro starts at around $500-$600 and goes up from there.

Call Howard Parker at Beard guitars. Howard is a frequent poster here on the forum. They can supply you with just about any size guitar you desire from $570 to $7500. Howard can flesh out your desire for a "Pro" model and give you a recommendation from their product line. The newest amplification system is Fishman's Aura system for the dobro. You can find that at Beard also for $500 installed. I would not hesitate to give Howard a call with your questions and he'll give you the straight answers based on what you're looking for.

I think you'll get several opinions here, but if you will be gigging in a band (w/drums and bass) with this dobro and you will be using a pickup, I'd get a Wecher/Scheerhorn and put a Fishman/Aura system in it. Either that, or a Beard/Gold Tone with the Aura system. If the band is really, really loud - then maybe a Beard Road-o-phonic with the Aura system.
If you are interested in a good acoustic sound (i.e. no pickup) then, I'd look at paying more and getting a Beard or one of the other smaller builders like Meredith or Redline. ...Scheerhorn, of course, if you can get one anymore. |

My Korean Regal squareneck does the job. A used one was $200 off Ebay a couple years ago.
First two digits of serial number indicate the year. The ones from the early 90's are what I went after. Newer ones are Chinese. I prefer the Korean ones. Very similar in appearance to the currently available Regal RD45. If you need to upgrade you can always get a new cone installed. Mine sounds acceptable as is.
It sounded much better after I opened it up and followed a dobro setup guide I found somewhere on the web. Mostly I made sure there weren't any glue globs around where the cone sits. Here's a link with a ton of resources off this forum.

Hey Brian
One of my Dobros is a Martinez....Square neck with a built in Danelectro Lipstick pick up...volume and tone control.....the pick-up is mounted on the top of the guitar....just at the end of the neck.
This pick-up just makes the Dobro sound louder...doesnt make it sound like a LapSteel
Nice finish......think it is made in China...................but who cares?
I think I paid about Aus $ 500...which prob translates to US $400
If I were to buy another I definately would buy a Beard.....I have been allowed to try a whole room full of them....just Help Myself.....and they are all great !

Hey Howard - Tony says that all you need is a ballpark $35-$40 Danelectro lipstick pickup and it amplifies your dobro accurately and doesn't make it sound like a lap steel.
I guess that means that Paul Beard, Larry Fishman, and Jerry Douglas must be "laughing all the way to the bank" what with all the resonator guitars being set up at ball park $500 with the new Fishman Aura system...
