Had a chance to catch these guys in Austin on Saturday nite. I had intended to stay for 4 or 5 songs, but ended up staying for the whole 2+ hour show.
As usual, Tommy sounded great, and I was totally impressed with Jim. If there was ever a guy that was 100% up front and honest musically, this is the guy. He's a great singer/songwriter, and his music spans so many of his obvious influences, from very traditional country, to rockabilly, to bluegrass, without any loss of originality. He's truly unique, and I think one of the best songwriters I've heard (evidently so do George Strait and some other notables).
From what Tommy says, he's also a great guy to work for, takes care of the band guys, way beyond just paying well, and is really interested doing a good job for club owners and promoters and giving the paying customer his money's worth.
So, here's an honest, extremely talented, stand-up nice guy, surrounded by really good players, and 30 people (maybe..) show up at Stubb's on a Saturday nite. Maybe he's too much of a musician's musician to appeal to the masses? What a shame...
Tired of the same 'ol stuff? Chase down one of his CD's and give him a listen or two... you won't regret it.
NOTE: No... I'm not getting paid  I just hate to see a guy like this not get the respect he deserves. |

I love this guy. I had a chance to play with him once in L.A., and it was a real highlight for me. It must be great to be a regular member of his band. I told him that to my mind, he was the 'missing link' between Gram Parsons and George Jones, and he seemed to really appreciate that.

I can't seem to time my visits to coinside with Jim L's Austin appearences. Only 30 folks at Stubbs is a shame.

| I heard Lauderdale w/Tommy at the Texas Music Revolution a few weeks back. What great songs first of all, and Tommy's tone and playing were superb. This is a great show to catch. |

| Tommy Detamore is from my neck of the woods in Virginia and I think is one of the greatest underrated steel guitar players of our time. I came to know of Tommy's incredible talents on the steel guitar in the early 80's. |

Thanks to Bill and everyone for the kind words. It is a thrill for me to be able to make music with such a gifted and kind man. And the band members (Tom Lewis-drums, David Carroll-bass, and Porter McClister-guitar) are seasoned veterans and wonderful players and traveling companions. Hopefully the Grammy win will enhance Jim's visibility as an artist. The only thing I could add about his records is this. His influences are incredibly diverse, and like Bill says he is a musical chameleon who is able to jump from one genre to another with ease, often times melding styles together into something fresh and genuine. While he is known primarily as a country and bluegrass artist, he hears many other things and is not afraid to run with them. So depending on which album you buy, you may or may not get what you are expecting. But to me it is all good, just not all "country".
Steve, no plans to come your way as of yet but I'll let you know...Chris and Danny, thanks so much. Graham, you need to get out more. There are a few good players around your area I'll see you in Nashville, pal! |

| Hey Tommy when are ya'll gonna get back out here the the west coast? I'll tell you after seeing Jim in "Stand By Your Man" it's hard not to see him as George Jones, he did such a great job at that part. |

I too am a fan of Jim's. And I've been a fan and a friend of Tommy's since we met when we were both on the road some 20+ years ago.

I can tell y’all this first hand……you have just a taste of Tommy’s talent and ability until you try to copy his ideas and emulate his touch. I have the good fortune of working with a Texas artist that Tommy played steel and guitar for on his CD. What a challenge to play the key parts, intros, fills and solos. Tommy you’re up there with the best….and Bruce Z agrees.
Oh, and if you haven’t heard Tommy play guitar, you’re missing a real treat there. Stands up with the best of them!
By the way Tommy, thanks for the referral……I’m really getting to see Texas first hand…..miles and miles of it! Ha, ha. All kidding aside, I’m really enjoying it. Thanks again Tommy. Russ
