Got home in time to watch the Opry. Next act up was Pete Finney kicking off Crazy Arms for Patty Loveless. Pete's intro, fills, solo and ending were very tasty and toneful. Patty's vocal rendition was incredibly beautiful! It was soulful and mournful; much slower than the shuffle we're used to. It's great to hear twin fiddles and steel in country music now and then.
Catch the rerun; you'll love it.

Thanks guys, it was a fun night. It only took a few quick "post Opry" pints to make me think it was a good idea to pick up a Tele in front of two great guitar players like Steve Hinson and David Grier, but from what I remember there were no serious injuries!

Thanks Steve, that means a lot coming from you.

In my humble opinion it seemed like a good night for steel on the TV part of the Opry; all four acts had steel players, all were up in the mix, all got camera time. Charlie Archer sounded great with Loretta Lynn and got to play a lot, and Tommy of course sounded great when the house band backed Crystal Shawanda (on that beautiful D-10 green Sho-pro).

Of course not that any of that matters, because JESSICA SIMPSON was on! Cool

Pete,
I'm a little late but,I would like to chime in and say, you played so pretty at the Opry last night. Just a beautiful example of taste, tone and intonation.
It is always a pleasure to visit and hear you play that Sierra! Smile

I agree. That's one of the outstanding things that I noticed on the show - how nice and up-front in the mix the steels all were. It was nice that the overall selection of tunes played was so condusive to steel. Great job!

Pete, just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your playing. Great tone from you and the Sierra. Loved the ending you put on Crazy Arms.

Were you going direct into the desk? If not, what were you using as an amplifier?

Puts to rest the argument that "no really great players play Keyless Guitars"! Alan

First time I watched the Opry in a while and agree with everyone, Patty was awesome, gonna buy that CD 'Sleepless Nights', also impressed with the Steel playing!

Have to admit that Jessica Simpson was not bad and she had a guy playing a red sho-bud S-10 pretty tasty, anyone know who he is, overall a great night as was said before. I'll tune in next week!

Alan, I was plugged into the same Opry steel rig that everyone (including Tommy White) uses; there's a rack with 4 separate "Webb" preamps, all feeding one speaker cabinet that faces up like a monitor and rolls so that each player can quickly position it where they need it. For the TV part of the Opry there's a rehearsal/soundcheck so there's time to dial in a tone; on a regular "radio" spot you've sometimes literally got just a few seconds to try to set it the way you like it.

I believe Jessica's steel player's name is Jay Jackson and I thought he did a fine job, I wish we'd had a little time to visit...

Tommy's Sho-pro looks so nice I'll admit I found myself staring it at a few times while I was playing. Jeff is building the most incredible guitars!

And thanks again to everybody for the many kind words...

Hey Pete Finney,That's was some nice pickin' on my old late friend " Chuck Seals " Crazy Arms that him and Ralph Mooney but together. Tell my ole Buddy David Turner I said hey. And give" Patty Loveless " a big hey for Larry Allison. Now this is all making sense to me why so many are getting " all shook up " at me from my old neighborhood of Nashville,Tnn. Few can sing a country song like Pattty, I have been a fan since the first time I heard her sing. I also loved the dress that Jessica almost had on.

I didn't get to hear the other steel players that were on the show but did get to see the beautiful Sho Pro. Jeff is building some really georgous guitars. I'm thinking about one of his S-10's.

I have also enjoyed Tommy Whites playing since he was a kid. I have a copy of the first album he had out. I think he was 15 years old.
