"These shows always run late"
Bobbe, sooooo true. But there is NO reason for this. If a player spends 20 minutes (of a scheduled 30 min set), talking and/or tuning, or adjusting his equipement, he should have NO more than 10 min to play!
Shows CAN run on time within give or take 5 minutes. There is ONE show that did precisely that. I can't begin to tell you how many telephone calls, emails and letters I received from fans AND players alike, commending that show for precisely "staying on time".
I had ONE and only ONE complaint in the two years the show ran. This complaint came from a player who is known for plaing for over and hour (in a scheduled 30 min set).
He was allowed 30 min at the Steel Guitar Extravaganza show. It took him 27 min by the clock to get ready to play AFTER his gear was put on stage by our stage crew. Out of respect and caring, I made an exception and allowed him an extra 10 min. But that is ALL he got. And THAT is more than he deserved, IMO.
It is blatantly inconsiderate for ANY player to abuse and take advantage of others by NOT adhering to the assigned time alloted in steel guitar shows IMO.
Finally this, I believe with all my heart that MOST fans would say (if truthful), "cut the gab and futzin around, and play music". IF that happened, the player(s) WOULD get more music time in. I know of one pro player that actually (by the clock) talked for a solid 55 minutes (in a scheduled 30 min set) before EVER hitting a note of music.
Simply NO excuse for this.
Anyway, my thoughts. And apparently ONLY my thoughts since most all shows run late consistently as you so aptly put it.
May God help us all,
carl

FWIW, the Dallas show this year ran remarkably on time. Kudos to the producers!
I too have to gripe about players that get up and talk more than they play. They are almost always legendary players who apparently think the audience is more interested in their stories than their playing. I for one, think it's because they don't have enough material prepared for 30 minutes of playing.

Looks like a great lineup. Wish I could get off work and attend, but duty calls.

Actually Bobbe, if you recall this show which is now in it's 3rd. year, has yet to run more than 30 min late on any given day.
Barry runs a tight show and does not overbook it.
Besides that, my sound system has a timer on it that shuts down at midnight EVERY day. hehe
See ya in a few days. Sure am glad you are not opening for me this year.

Stop worrying about what makes a steel work and concentrate on how YOU make it sound"

Bobbe, I guess what you were trying to say is, save a hug for me Bill.
I will. But get in line, I have many to hug that are MUCH better looking than you first.
See ya Friday.
