My buddy Tater has been my guitar tech for many years.
Recently he rigged up a pickup winder from an old hard drive and various other items he had lying around.

It was put to the test with a Supro Supreme.
The pickup was shot and needed rewinding.
The original bobbins were made of cardboard and straws, and had pretty much disintegrated - so he made new ones of acrylic.

Here is the restored guitar - it has Rick Aiello remags installed and it sounds killer.

More pics here.

Video clip of the pickup winder in action here.

Man, that guy's talented ...

I've seen him on several Comedy Central specials ...

... and he's a guitar tech too ...

Yep, that's him alright!
His dog calls him Tater . .

Seriously though, about 15 years or so ago he was in my band and we decided everyone should have cool stage names. So I named him Tater. For a while everyone called him that, but now I think I'm the only one who still does. His real name is Larry Rubin. Over the years he has done many excellent guitar repairs and restorations for me. He works in the guitar repair dept at MAE Music in Fort Lauderdale, and he's also one heck of a guitar player.

I'm going to wind some Supro pickups. Any idea what gauge of wire and how many windings?

Since this topic appeared over a year ago, Tater has moved on up to become the guitar tech at Guitar Center in Hallandale FL.
The phone number there is 954 456 7890 - ask for Larry.
