Theresa, you should hear his Nephew " Michael Whitley " sing that song " Don't close your eyes " . If you do and listen to " Michael " you can hear Keith's voice in him. Keith Whitley was a dear friend on mind as is his Mother Faye and Family still today. I have some great memories with Keith. Leo J.Eiffert,Jr.

Hi Theresa, Keith was one of the best vocalists and writers out there. I was playing a gig only 8 miles from him when he played his last gig. Jody.

Theresa, I met Keith years ago in Nashville and he was as much a gentleman as he was a great singer.
We met in a restraunt and talked music for a couple of hours.
My respect for him will always be the utmost.

Keith and I were friends, back in his bluegrass days. We used to kid each other about our drinking. I've been sober now for 20+ years, and I STILL remember the day that my friend Jimmy Campbell called, and told me. Keith was a great guy, and people today have no idea that their singing was so influenced by Keith.
I STILL want to kick his butt, and then hug his neck. Another sad, "coulda-been" story.

Keith's take on "I Never Go Around Mirrors," might be the definitive version. And the last studio album he did with J.D. Crowe, is a must-have. Great steel by Jernigan on that one, too.

I'm a Keith Whitley fan too. I still play the CD's of his that I have including the one that has "Mirrors" on it (I keep a copy of that one in my car).

But, I've worked several shows with Allan Frizzell and Allan does his brother's song very well and if you close your eyes you think it's Lefty (but my steel picking is no where near the quality of Paul Franklin's on Keith's session). Allan is now doing Gospel.

I loved his voice so much that it made me a little angry that his life ended in such an unnecessary way. Daryl Singletary does a fine job on Mirrors.

I'm a major Keith Whitley fan, going back to his work with J.D. and Ralph. There are a bunch of cool youtube videos from all eras.

I agree with Steve on his work with J.D. - the album "My Home Ain't In The Hall Of Fame" is, for me, a landmark bluegrass record with killer steel playing by Doug Jernigan.

Guys, I wasn't trying to knock Allan's, or Daryll's, or anybody else's take on the tune. I guess I worded my post wrong. I just like Keith's cut better. A great tune, no matter who's singing it.

Dave,

Is Keith singing "MHAITHOF" on one of those YouTubes?

If it's the same song that Jonathan Edwards did on his "Have Yourself A Good Time" LP, then I'd love to hear Keith's version.
Great song. Edwards had Bill Keith playing steel and George Grantham on drums on his version. This is just off the bottom of my head.
"Have Yourself A Good Time For Me" is also another great tune from this album.

I'm not to familiar with much of Keith's music; much to my dismay. Just now been getting around to him.

Didn't mean to topic-stray, here.

Did Keith write MHAITHOF? Or Jonathan Edwards? Once again, I got the LP buried here somewhere, and I'm just too pooped to go and dig it out (to find out who the author is).

Chip, it IS the same tune. On the Crowe album, Jernigan played steel. And Keith sang the SHOES off that sucker! I'm pretty sure that neither Keith nor Jonathan wrote it, though. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Joe Dolce - http://www.joedolce.net/ - wrote "My Home Ain't In The Hall Of Fame".

I agree with Steve - Keith sung his butt off on that record - but that's nothing new. Their version of Harlan Howard's "She's Gone, Gone, Gone" still leaves my head shaking. They nail FBB's "Sin City", and a bunch more. Certainly on my Top 10 Bluegrass Album list.

Thanks Stephen and Dave. I was hopin' so.

Still don't know if I can see or hear it on the YouTubes.

I'm now gonna do some YouTube "Surfin' U.S.A". Hoo-Ray.

As much as a great song is, I'm one of these nuts that has to know who wrote it; when; why; how; and on and on and on... just gotta know.

I'll find out. Even if I have to dig out that LP. God, I hope it'll be easier than that.

Very Happy

Jody,Keith had a Guitar he named Lefty.Real sweet sound. Gene Johnson of Diamond Rio or Ricky Skaggs or Earl thomas Conley can tell you about that Guitar. I've played (Leo) played it once at Keith's Mother, Faye's home. You talk about weird.I think Keith's son has that Guitar (Lefty) now. His son should be a Police Officer by now. LJ

Sorry Glenn, but Dave is correct. Although, Lefty Frizzell did record "Railroad Lady" on one of his last ABC/Dot label recording sessions. I always felt that is where Keith heard it, as it has often been stated, he was a major Lefty fan.
