I don't want to wear out my welcome or be a pest but if I may ask for one more thing. I'd like to get your "must listen to": song(s) or CD with electric LS.

I'm hitting the web assets but I'm sure there's stuff that if you were teaching Lap, you'd say "go listen to this". I want to get my ears and brain wrapped around and into it.

So rather than searching for nuts like the blind squirrel, if you would please give up some standout examples of:

* songs/albums with electric lap prominent/featured *
-doesn't matter if it's old time or brand new stuff
-fast/medium/slow is all good
-don't care what tuning
-the MORE STYLES THE BETTER (country/swing/rock/blues/jazz/spiritual/hawaiian)

THANKS!!!

All great suggestions.

Here is a good one for the Pink Floyd fans. This is off a great DVD David Gilmour did back in 2004, nice rendition of Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

And here is another cool one, a nice cover of Modern Love by Last Town Chorus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAypnmdiCEk

MLA - I'd have never found that on my own. Wow that is something to sticky, just fascinating. Is is against protocol to do a sticky?

I also can't believe I missed the "Recommended Listening" on Brad's page.

Now I feel a bit like a dope, but chalk it up to: not the first time, nor the last time, this will happen.

I agree with Terry, Steinar Gregertsen's CD is a must have. Not just for lap steel, but for an overall listening treat.

Terry - ordered those!

I had not heard of CD Baby before. Thanks so much!

I'll add it to my favorites files/ever growing list of "where to find good music, new and old."

I guess this + web is the permanent way to escape radio and record companies:

*Classics from 1976 - we play 'em 14x day, 28x day on 2-fer-Tuesday

*groundbreaking Rapper of the month

*new 14 year old country legend "Misty" sings her hit: "my parents never spent more than $1800 on any of my birthday parties"

Thanks everyone! I want to say that because you folks really go out of your way to help people.

I've been listening to so many of your recommendations the last few days - really expanded my musical world and lap understanding. Got more arriving this week.

Gotta say, it's deceptive: may not sound fast but people can haul hindquarter on this instrument...

Although it's technically "slide guitar", make sure to check out everything by LeRoy Parnell. Where Lindley's "Running on Empty" style covers the major key stuff so tastefully, and you have a whole plethora of blues stylists, Parnell does this cool crossover taste of blues/sweet country thing that's just perfect for lap steel. His last several albums are pure joy to listen to.

I'll back Mark up on Lee Roy. I have been turned on my head by his playing on a number of songs. And it translates quite nicely to lap steel.

There's a ton of lap steel vids on my YouTube channel, including the aforementioned Herb Remington clips - which were recorded at the TSGA Non Pedal Session last March.
http://youtube.com/rickalexander47
I'm in the process of uploading about 60 more videos from the ISGC Hawaiian Show which took place in St Louis last Friday . .

I would also recommend
The Vanduras - "In The Dark" CD with Gary Brandin
Bucky Baxter - "Most Likely No Problem" - killer stuff
anything by Hank Williams - the immortal Don Helms on steel
anything by Herb Remington - my particular favorites are "Remington Rides Again" and "Steel Guitar Holiday", but you can't go wrong listening to anything Herb has recorded . .
<marquee> . . . and Joaquin Murphey!</marquee>

I'm glad somebody finally mentioned Mr. Helms. I'd put him at the top of the list. Don is THE guy for getting absolute maximum impact out of simple, down to earth licks. He is, therefore, the best place to begin.

Greg Leisz playing on Bill Frissell's Blues Dream album
(including the tune called 'Greg Leisz"!!!). All sorts of Lap guitars and great photos on the cd sleeve of them too.

Thanks for the LeRoy Parnell tip.

With the question for essential listening, the type of music you like should be part of the question I think.
Everyone has their favorites, but those may not be exactly what you are into or looking for.
Sort of subjective, like trying to describe tone Smile

I don't know about that, Bill. I am not a country fan, nor do I care for classical music; I can still learn a great deal from listening to Leon McAuliffe, Sol Hoopii, Jerry Byrd... I like to be exposed to anything that can be played on a steel so that I can use their approaches in what I am doing. I have learned more from Bobbe Seymour's country CD's than I have learned from anyone, but I am certainly not trying to get any classic country gigs. All this music should be thought of, if not as essential, as important references for anyone who wants to be a good all around steeler.
