Topic: ESSENTIAL listening for Electric Lap Steel - what say you |

I don't want to wear out my welcome or be a pest but if I may ask for one more thing. I'd like to get your "must listen to": song(s) or CD with electric LS.
I'm hitting the web assets but I'm sure there's stuff that if you were teaching Lap, you'd say "go listen to this". I want to get my ears and brain wrapped around and into it.
So rather than searching for nuts like the blind squirrel, if you would please give up some standout examples of:
* songs/albums with electric lap prominent/featured *
-doesn't matter if it's old time or brand new stuff
-fast/medium/slow is all good
-don't care what tuning
-the MORE STYLES THE BETTER (country/swing/rock/blues/jazz/spiritual/hawaiian)

Check out two of our own members here, Steinar Gregertsen, & Steve Cunningham...you can find their CDs on CD Baby...Also, check out Eliot Morris,"What's Mine Is Yours"...it has new playing by Mr. Dave/David Lindley...good stuff...Terry V.

MLA - I'd have never found that on my own. Wow that is something to sticky, just fascinating. Is is against protocol to do a sticky?
I also can't believe I missed the "Recommended Listening" on Brad's page.
Now I feel a bit like a dope, but chalk it up to: not the first time, nor the last time, this will happen. |

I agree with Terry, Steinar Gregertsen's CD is a must have. Not just for lap steel, but for an overall listening treat.

I've been listening to so many of your recommendations the last few days - really expanded my musical world and lap understanding. Got more arriving this week.
Gotta say, it's deceptive: may not sound fast but people can haul hindquarter on this instrument...

| Although it's technically "slide guitar", make sure to check out everything by LeRoy Parnell. Where Lindley's "Running on Empty" style covers the major key stuff so tastefully, and you have a whole plethora of blues stylists, Parnell does this cool crossover taste of blues/sweet country thing that's just perfect for lap steel. His last several albums are pure joy to listen to. |

I'm glad somebody finally mentioned Mr. Helms. I'd put him at the top of the list. Don is THE guy for getting absolute maximum impact out of simple, down to earth licks. He is, therefore, the best place to begin.

With the question for essential listening, the type of music you like should be part of the question I think.
Everyone has their favorites, but those may not be exactly what you are into or looking for.

| I don't know about that, Bill. I am not a country fan, nor do I care for classical music; I can still learn a great deal from listening to Leon McAuliffe, Sol Hoopii, Jerry Byrd... I like to be exposed to anything that can be played on a steel so that I can use their approaches in what I am doing. I have learned more from Bobbe Seymour's country CD's than I have learned from anyone, but I am certainly not trying to get any classic country gigs. All this music should be thought of, if not as essential, as important references for anyone who wants to be a good all around steeler. |
