Red, I just got home from the Saturday evening show. I got to see Hal Rugg and John Hughey play as well as some other fine players. I got to meet the 8 year old boy named Austin who was playing in the Carter booth. I loved the playing but I was able to meet a few of the Forum members. I really enjoyed getting to meet some of the guys in person. I am already looking forward to the show next year....Paul

I stayed for all 4 days. But I must say I didn't spend much time at "the show". I spent all my time trying to learn.

Went to Jeff Newman's little course. That was pretty good. I'm not a pro steel player yet but I know enough music theory that I didn't think I'd learn much. I did get a few ideas from the course and I can't wait to put then into action.

I bought a BJS bar from Herby Wallace. I got Jeff Newman's speedpicking course. I bought a Steeler's Choice Pro-I seat - needed that. I've been playing from a regular chair. Not ideal for steel players. And I ordered a new Sierra Session 12. Getting a blue one like Manfred Stall's blue Session 10. (Thanks to Manfred for bringing that for me to see.)

But the coolest thing was trying out all the different copendants. I thought I had figured out exactly how I wanted to tune my guitar but now I'm even more confused than when I started.

I may send my current Session 12 to Sierra to have some work done on it - or maybe not. I spend plenty of time with the owner and got a lot of free advice on setting up my guitar. I intend to add a couple of changes before I finalize the copedant on my new guitar.

Special thanks to Billy Phelps & Al Brisco,
they played so many licks. There was always a crowd in the Carter Room. They would let any one play with them. Great songs. & really enjoyed your show. Thanks again guys.

Once again the TSGA has come and gone and I had a large time...was able to meet some new friends....got my room without a problem.. i.e. didn't encounter any overbooking issues as in times past..saw all my left coast buds...that would include Larry Petree, Jerry Pack, David "wild man" Wright...friends from my area would be Jerry Roller,Tim McCutchen, Don Compston..Harvey Wanier from San Angelo..and for me this is the time of fellowship. For the record, and this makes my tenth year in a row, this was the very best produced show in the 15 yrs I been going...my hat goes off to Louie Hallford and his choice of side men. I thought Leland Green played awesome..his choice of talent..particularly Randy Beavers and Jim Cohen and also Roger Edgington on the Thursday schedule..he needs to be advanced to the head of the class.Louis also provided the absolute best sound men EVER..there was not one single hitch the entire week-end..that alone made the show my most enjoyable..Thank you Louie!! Austin Stewart..wow..he stole the hearts of the crowd and did a great job. I bought me some new treadmill material..two from the Herbster, one from Cohen,Priceless(great choice of tunes)and Lost in the Feeling..great stuff. All in all it was a great time..the incomparable vocals of Johnny Bush and Curtis Potter..Loessburg and Mathis were standouts..Morrell was at his best..Matlock and I will keep this show on our permanent calender.

Wow!! Got to jam with Albert Talley and Tommy Dodd in the Norris room...a memory maker. Did you dig the lead guitar player, he really made me feel good with my set. Sincerely, Bob

I forgot to mention this but I had a chance to spend some time with Jimmie Webb..in my book, this man is a legend..his mind is sharp as a tack...he has meant so much through the years to the Steel community..just another highlight of this years convention.

Sunday morning I walked into the MSA room and found a real treat. Reece was there with Johnny Cox doing an informal jam. Reece has some real good tracks and it was wall to wall awesome steel jamming! The interplay between the two was amazing to watch. The thing about these steel shows, is that sometimes the sideshows are the main attraction. They were both playing the new MSA Milliniums. Joan joined them later with some great licks that she can put down.

Seeing Speedy West again is something that excites me every time I see him. Bless his heart,it is becoming more and more difficult for Speedy to make these trips. I cherish every moment thet I get to see and talk to him. He is not just a steel player to me, he is someone I have fallen in love with as a person. His beautiful wife is such support in helping him make it to the shows.

Please keep him in your prayers as he was feeling very poorly at the show.

We had a great time at the Dallas show. Have to admit ,one of biggest highlites is getting to be with Speedy and Mary West and Tom and Rolene Brumley. The show was great but visiting with everybody is also a big part of our pleasure. Just a great big fellowship, and that's the name of the game for us.

Well Red, we missed you. I know you're wondering about the Duncans. Donnie and Wanda didn't miss a thing. I think they were in the ballroom from sunrise to sunset each day. Well maybe not sunrise Cliff and Kelly were the most impressed. Kelly said this Dallas thing was the best thing ever to happen to them. Lane and Zack had a ball too. They will have plenty of pictures and CD's when they get back to Pueblo which will be sometime tuesday. Donnie will probably have some new licks too

Well, this was my first time to play a set on the Thursday night show and I had a ball.
My bucket was pretty full when my set was over but what the heck. (You had to be there to understand the BUCKET).
I have never met so many gracious players in my life. Not one player refused a conversation and "REECE", Buck Grantham, Jr. Knight and Louie Hallford have all agreed to be our featured player at "ROSE CITY" Steel Guitar Assn. later this year. You talk about a line-up,,,,, no-one could beat that one.
Others would have committed if I had just asked.

Buddy Hrabal will be our featured player this Sunday in Tyler and we have Lou Rochelle as our featured singer. That one should not be missed. E-mail me for information.

Thanks to all who put on the show and the back-up band and sound people were outstanding. NEXT YEAR IS ALREADY TOO FAR AWAY.

Artie

Jeff Newman's seminar was called 'Super song' and was all about recognising eight chord progressions from a simple 1/4/5 through the minors 7flat etc. He has a course called 'Play what you hear' which is basically the same thing.

All excellent stuff!

Will keep Speedy in our prayers. I got his autograph and his picture with Austin. You could tell he really didn't feel good, but still took the time for us. Thanks Speedy.

That show is the most fun I could have with my clothes on! Congratulations to the TSGA for a flawless event and the Harvey hotel for a good job. The chance to meet luminaries like Speedy will remain an indelible memory. Thanks guys.

I haven't seen this mentioned yet, but the show was much more enjoyable without the smoke to contend with. Sorry, smokers.

I think the sound as a whole was better this year, but the lead guitar was never quite loud enough, no matter who was playing. The fiddle was sometimes too loud. Maybe the sound man is a fiddler, and hates lead players. Even though I couldn't hear him much, I thoroughly enjoyed Leland Green's lead playing.
