Maybe made by Kay or Harmony. The only two I've seen
had a really strange "crackle" finish.

There's one over here - http://www.guitar-museum.com/guitar-3963-VINTAGE-OLD-KRAFTSMAN-LAP-STEEL-GUITAR

I've seen them in many shapes and finishes on eBay, don't know who made them but this article about an "Old Kraftsman" bass claims that they were 'spin-offs' of Kay: http://theonesthatgotaway.blogspot.com/2008/02/old-kraftsman-bass.html

The "Old Kraftsman" brand was sold by Montgomery Ward in the 40s. I had an archtop electric guitar back then which was an Old Kraftsman from Wards. I was a cheapie compared to the big name stuff, but played very easy with good action setup on the strings.

Yup, you're correct MLA. The memory just got jogged. The Spiegel catalog was the source. The Airline was a Wards trade moniker, even table-top radios with plastic cabinets. Thanks for the catalog pix.
