Looks a bit like khaya wood, called "African Mahogany", very similar to sapele. Whatever it is, it's going to be a pleasure to look at and own.  |

Alright Fred, here it is in Paddy's words:
"It's made from Sirius, a wood grown in British Columbia and used by some
Canadian makers of fine instruments. A friend and I got some sent over here
last year from a little wood company in an isolated coastal village in BC,
after hearing about its legendary acoustic qualities.
Not sure what to expect, I built this guitar a few months ago and the sound
is comparable with the best Tasmanian Blackwood I have used. It's impressed
everyone with it's depth of tone, and from the word go, the guitar had a
great resonance.
I can tell you it's braced with spruce, has a rosewood fretboard,
bridge and
binding, bound headstock, Gotoh tuners, peal inlay and comes complete
with a
hard black case."
In a subsequent email Paddy corrected to say the wood actually comes from Queensland Australia, but is sold by the small supplier in BC.
He also stated it was very warm sounding, moreso even than Mahogany. |

I originally contacted Paddy to ask about a Mahogany Weissenborn. He said his book was filled until February, but he had this one ready to go.
So I'm having faith in Paddy's words and reputation.
I have a feeling I'm going to be rewarded for that faith. It certainly has it in the visual! |

I thought I'd add to this thread as my custom baritone Burgin Weissenborn is now ready and on its way from Wellington to me!  It is a baritone version (27.4" scale length - like a cello) of the two Weissenborns Paddy has built for David Lindley (these can be heard and seen here). I am very excited about this guitar and I think it will have a huge sound! I'm planning on tuning it to B (D format - E in G format) or even A (in D format - D in G format). Ain't she pretty!
All Sapele (African Mahogany) with rosewood binding. My own fretboard inlay design (refined by Paddy). A K&K Pure Western Mini is installed (and Paddy was amazed with this pickup). Rosewood fretboard and bridge, MOP inlays, Ebony bridge pins.
Can't wait to play it!

Glad to hear about the K&K too. Coincidentally, I bought one off ebay today from K&K's ebay store. I'll have it in by this weekend.
I have a baritone on order from Daniel Brauchli. I'll be bugging you about tunings and string guages Mr. Kinborn. See Daniels work below.

For those of you who haven't heard Paddy, the musician (as opposed to Paddy, the luthier) his CD/DVD package with the Wooden Box Band is called "My Sweet Town" and I highly recommend it. |
