I recently switched to a U12 guitar and like the sound within the arrangement of strings. But do I really need a 12 string bar, or can I be just as efficient and effective over time with a 10 string bar. I have a BJS 10 (15/16) and a Marlen 12 (7/8 ).

With my S12U I use a 10-string double bullet Twister. I find it is smoother going on and off the low strings. I have a 12-string bar, but rarely use it. I think lots of 12-stringers use a 10-string bar.

Well that is an interesting thread--seems like most 12-string players are just fine with the 10-string bar. I was too until I had one made (by bullet bars) which covers all 12 strings. I very much prefer the longer bar, although it was pretty heavy until I drilled out the middle 3/8". (Bullet Bars would have done that if I'd asked). To each his own--there's no right answer to this one.

Glenn - I actually went the other direction. I play a U-12 and had Jim build me a bar that is shorter than a 10-string bar. I just covers the first 9 strings. It keeps the bar off the big bottom 3 strings when I'm not playing them. It also fits my small hand better. I really like it.
