Last night my friend Tom McDonald and I watched for over 5 hours the incredible Jake Hooker Band at the Stock Yards in Ft. Worth featuring the incredible steel playing of Dicky Overby and the awesome fiddle playing of the great Bobby Flores. Words don't describe Dicky's steel playing...no guitar playing just blazing steel guitar and fiddle.
They played the straight ahead pure country hits that made me think what ever happened to the pure country sounds featuring steel guitar like they played all night.
The tone of his '66 Emmons is something to die for! Dicky Overby is coming out with a CD in March...watch for it and buy it!! He's been a favorite since those early years with faron Young and Ronnie Milsap. He is one of the most underrated steel players...

Bill, you lucky dog. You got to do last night what we were supposed to do during my visit last fall. Dicky is the most under rated steel player that I know. And I'll say it again, Dicky is in my top five and on top for just plain country E9th.

Bill and Johnny, and Peggy, I completely agree with your "Posts" concerning "Jake Hooker" featuring "Dicky Overby and Bobby Flores", two exceptionally "Superb and Gifted" Musicians!!!!! I really can't remember when I have heard "Traditional Country Music" played any better, or with such "Professional Excellence and Enthusiasm"!!!!! Dicky and Bobby "Feed" off each other with a "Touch" that you just really don't "Envision" much any more!!!! Gentlemen, "Thank You Both" for a "Superb Evening of Entertainment and Professional Musicanship"!!!!!!

I don't think it will bother anyone that Justin T's studio took care of Dicky's album.

This afternoon, Bobby Flores, Al Michalczak (both wonderful steel players!)and I spent about three hours trying out Tom McDonald's new MSA. Once again, the prevalent thing to us was the sweet clear sustain to the "Hughey-land" above the 15th fret. Great sounding steel guitar Tom!! We all left trying to figure how we could steal Tom's super sounding MSA but...
Johnny...we were going to call you and Joan last night while Dicky was playing but my old age showed by me leaving my phone at home!! We'll catch them as I think they are back during the week you are hanging around our house before the TSGC so we'll go. What a super E9th player! Dickey is moving this week but he sends his warm greetings and said he will call you shortly.
It was a delight to meet you Peggy! See everyone at the TSGC in March. |
