Here's a link to a wonderful performance of Sweet LeiLani by Basil Henriques. At 2:36 in the video, it appears that Basil is adjusting a control to change the tone. I was hoping that someone knew what that control is?

Also, I was hoping to know what tuning Basil used on this recording?

Thanks, Dave

Hi, Dave. Basil is the best Hawaiian steel player I've ever heard. I think he's just making an adjustment to coincide with the single-string picking he does in that part. He re-adjusts it when he goes back to playing chords again.
Hawaiian music is almost always done using a 6th tuning--C6th, A6th, B6th. I (try my damndest to) play Hawaiian using the E9th with A&B pedals down and/or the E-lever over, both of which put the E9th into a 6th type of tuning. But it's that 6th note of the octave that gives you that unmistakable Hawaiian sound.
You can hear a lot more of Basil's work on HSGA.org (The Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association). Enjoy!
