My son Noah who is 8 received his first pedal steel today from Bob Simmons in Alabama. Well crafted SD-10 steel. He is very excited and on his way...I had to pull him away from it for bedtime  He will be a member soon..Anyway, just introducing him..here is a pic..notice the pedals have little A, B, C letters and notice the cool crocs

Go Noah, man what a neat thing to see. Plenty of learning material out there, not like when I started.
Brian, Get him a decent tuner,maybe a volume pedal and spend time with him..

IMHO, no vol.ped.for a beginner is a very good idea.I know I tried to use mine to hide poor right hand technique..

Noah, what a great start you have, your own steel and an in house teacher.
In ten years time imagine where you could be at just 18 yrs of age.
I started learning lap steel at your age but I didnt continue and stopped when I was 12 yrs old.....(40 yrs. ago)...I very much regret having to stop back then.
It was many many years later when I had the money to buy a guitar of my own but had no time to put into learning.
Its great to see a young man of your age starting out on this wonderful instrument, is that Scottys book I see on your music stand?
Look forward to seeing you on youtube shortly.
I wish I could be 8 yrs old again , could someone in the electronics section come up with a time travel machine please ?? |

Noah....when I was your age (50) years ago....I wanted so bad to learn the steel guitar....but with a large family and not much money....it was impossible to get those things, even though they didn't cost near as much as they do now. It was 13 years down the road before I realized my wish would come true. That's been 38 years ago, and let me tell you I love the steel guitar more now than I did then.....Even after all these years I still try to get in at least a minimum of 1 hour /day of good solid practice. Brian......you've done a great thing here....and I applaud you.....this instrument will keep him busy for the rest of his life...give him lots of encouragment and I already know that the love is there.....Bless you both........HAL

Hi Brian and all you others on this thread WE at the New England Steel Guitar Association are Proud to Announce that Noah and his Dad Brian are now members of the New England Steel Guitar Association and we plan on helping Noah with his Steel Guitar Playing.What a great time for this young boy to start playing Steel guitar. I wanted to start when i was 8 but back 63 years ago money was tight.I have a Great Neice that will be at our meeting Sunday and she is learning to play Lap Steel and Lead Guitar.Brian make sure you bring your Steel and Noah Steel with you this Sunday for the Meeting and jam after.We will give him playing time just like evryone else.
