Tuning question

Greetings from West Virginia I have a question to ask. what was the most common tuning used on the early faron young, carl smith. and so on 50's non pedal players I have a 8 string and love the tone it gives and would like to take it out one night where the older music is and play it like it should sound. thanks for any help in a advance.
