Calling all SGFites. Bill Malone, country music historian and author of "Country Music, USA" and others, has a weekly country radio show on WORT 89.9 FM out of Madison,WI(it can be streamed off the web). Wednesday from 9 to 12am central time. His show usually have a historical theme. He wants to do a show on the History of the Steel. From Hawiian to the very early pedals. I offered to help find material. So, since I have a limited background (2 years) I turn to the experts........
I need suggestions on significant players and a piece of music that is notable to them.
We can get 35 to 40 songs on unless we get a phone interview with a player, like Herb Remington or the like.
Bill will let me know what date as I get enough songs.
So, please give me your suggestions....if left to me it would not be as good as with your input.

Thank you Thank you

Bob Dunn's "Taking Off" with Milton Brown for one.

Take your pick on the Sol Hoopii, although "12th St. Rag" is a tour de force.

American - Alvino Rey, Joaquin Murphy, Speedy West, Jerry Byrd, Buddy Emmons, Big Jim Murphy.

After Sol, per Hawaiian/style, musts are - Dick McIntire, David Kelii, Jerry Byrd, Bobby Ingano.

YouTube has some rare and good enuf sound quality versions of tunes that would be excellant for air play. This forum has rare examples that would be of importance, as well as the HSGA audio page, but you will probably need to ask for those.

Thanks guys, keep'em comin'

Songs with vocals that have a notable steel solo would be great. The listening audience will be more than just steelers and their ears need more than just instrumentals. Though instrumentals will be the lions share.

Bing Crosby did a bunch with Dick McIntire.

Must have: Roy Rodgers' "Kid With A Rip In His Pants" with a blazing solo by Joaquin Murphy. If you need it, I have the 78.

Do you have a way to send me an electronic file?

Thanks Mike, the Roy Rogers/Joaquin Murphy sounds like an unlikely combination, bet it sounds cool.

Anyone know who Vance Terry recorded with?

He recorded with Billy Jack Wills and Bob Wills, too, as well as his famous Jimmie Rivers tapes, released as Brisbane Bop.

I can hook you up with some of that, too.

I'd suggest - Kawaikapuokalani - from - Jerry Byrd-Steel Guitar Hawaiian Style, his first fully Hawaiian style release.
And, I'll Be All Smiles Tonight, or, the Sweet Lei Mokihana medley, both off of his last release in his lifetime - By Request.
Or anything from that CD!

That first tune you mentioned Ron, was done by Jerry on an early frypan, and would be a good example of that guitar, and of Jerry's playing of course.
Crosby's early stuff had Sam Koki on it I believe, interesting '30s style.

How about Leon McCauliff (sp) ?? I would think the folks in the steel guitar hall of fame should be the mix.

Thanks Bill and Ron. Those are good leads. I think the western swing guys should be there for sure. Herb, Leon, Noel, Morrel.....anyone else? I've got ideas for Murphy and Dunn from Mike Neer.

I wonder what song or solo you think says what that player is about.

Wow...talk about missing the obvious. I just printed out the list from the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. What a list. I still need help with picking a song to go with the players.

Bill, I believe that most were played by Dick, but that Sam did at least a few.

Mark, everybody is going to have their own ideas as to what song represents the most about any one player. So getting that deep into it might be a can of worms. I'd say just find examples by each that has plenty of good steel and let it go at that. If the show is a hit and warrants another, then you will have a basis by which to delve deeper.

Heh, I was going to suggest the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame myself. Let me look up some suggested songs based on that list.

I want to include a Little Roy Wiggins number, I have Eddie Arnold's "What is Life without love" but I'm not sure if it is Little Roy. Great playing. Anybody know?
