Microsoft Update tells me that I need Service Pack 3.
What is it, and do I need it ?
Many thanks in advance,

Download and read the short SP3 Whitepaper here. Looks like mostly minor fixes and some new code to support certain features in Win2k8 Server. I haven't read anything that suggests it's a "must-have". Still, the reports I've seen from people who loaded SP3 have been mostly positive. |

I use automatic updates on my Dell with XP Pro and have downloaded SP3, but it won't install. I've tried several times. |

If you do successfully install XP SP3 you will be entitled to an additional year of support from Microsoft.
Some computers must have certain drivers updated, or services disabled (HP) before SP3 can be installed. Visit Windows Updates manually (using IE) and run a Custom check for updates. It will reveal any hardware drivers that are available.
Use some caution when installing hardware driver updates from WUS. A couple of them were problematic in the past, and will be again. If the part's manufacturer offers an update it may be more compatible than a generic one from MS. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum
