Kinda a new here but I was registered once long ago in a distant galaxy.
I don't really play steel yet but I have always wanted to.I have played guitar, bass, keys, sax, harmonica , drums, trumpet and bugle over the last 44 years and have a decent grasp of basic theory.
I went to the flea market two months ago and stumbled across an 8 string multichord 4 pedal cheap so I bought it. I had so much fun with it the next day that I decided then and there it was time to buy a real one so I started my hope chest. I am a quarter of the way there so, soon I will be bombarding ya'll with stupid questions. I hope I don't annoy you to much.
I am a machinist and I made about 20 bell cranks out of stainless steel for an emmons for a gent registered at this site. It was about two or three years ago and I don't remember his name.

Hello Jerry,
Welcome to the Forum. I don't know where you are at in NY, but if you are anywhere close to Walton, NY stop in and see me. I have a mom/pop music store in Walton, south of Oneonta, east of Binghamton. I always have a steel set up, ready to play, and we offer lessons.
I have a like new Carter Starter with a volume pedal, bar and picks for sale for $695. Come and try it out.
Hope you find a guitar and get started. There are more players in NY than you might think. I know of four or five in my area, and several in Woodstock and some in other areas of NY State.

I am near Woodstock, owned a record store there in the mid 70's, met my wife there and was married there. I know a few musicians still who work out of there but no steel players.
I don't want to buy a starter. I figure to save up to about two grand and get me a nice used one. If I don't stick with it, and I don't see that happening, I can always resell it.

Hey Jerry---I spent a few years there in the mid 70's. Was your shop just off town center on Tinker St. by any chance? I recall my bud & I finding some Bird discs and some ESP records at that shop.

Hey Jerry,
"Fooch" Fischetti is a steel player living in the Woodstock area. He also plays fiddle, makes a living playing and doing session work. Look him up for some lessons or chat. Walton is about and hour and a half from Woodstock. I sometimes play in the Fleishmans area at a Mexican restaurant on Main street. I'll let you know when I'm in the area.

| It was behind the The Tinker Street Cafe for awhile, Green Dragon Records, then my partner Russel Greene and myself moved out onto Tinker St. proper, basically across from the green. for awhile. There was another record store for awhile, the Juggler, that was just past the Tinker Street Cafe going west out of town after we closed down, it was probably that one. After reading your thread again, we had a ton of ESP records, we knew the owner and he fronted them to us. |
