A couple years back when I was playing steady with Cody Bryant I used to have to play Orange Blossom Special which calls for that real fast, smooth Franklinesque style and on a good night,if the band didn't speed up too much when my solo came around,I could just barely handle it. But that was right out at the edge of my speed picking ability and at least half the time I had trouble with it. There were other bluegrass standards in that band's book and I had to get out there and go for those too with similar results. It was good for me though.Doug Livingston's on that gig now and he can probably handle those things better than I did. Funny thing is that I can get at most of that stuff easily on mandolin and I've only been playing that for around 5 years and I've been playing steel for 35.
The other thing that comes to mind was a number of gigs I played with Albert Lee where I was expected to keep up with him, trade solos etc. I don't have to tell you what that was like....I mostly hung in there like a side of beef but not without a few spectacular one-man trainwrecks - reminiscent of the old Wide World of Sports intro where the guy skids off the ski jump and cartwheels into the crowd just when the announcer says "and the agony of defeat...". |
