Great News!! Hal Rugg to be at the Arizona Jam!!

Post by Billy Easton »

Great news for all of us!! Just talked to Hal Rugg, and he will be in Apache Junction to play for us at our new Southwest Steel Guitar Association meeting on Saturday, Jan. 25th and Sunday Jan. 26th!!! We may have some other surprises in store. I am talking to some other nationally known steel players about coming as well. Also returning will be the great Mike Smith of Gatlin Brothers fame!! It will be at the same place....Central Arizona Community College, Room 444, in Apache Junction. More details to follow, but be making plans to attend. We are expecting folks not only from Arizona, but also California, Texas, maybe Mississippi and Louisiana!! It's gonna be a party!!! You won't want to miss this one.

The nearest motels would be in Apache Junction. AJ is north of US60 on the east side of the Valley.

I believe the Grand is a nice place.

More details regarding the meeting:

Central Arizona Community College
273 Old West Hiway, Room 444
Apache Junction, Arizona

Apache Junction is approximately 20 miles east of Phoenix on US 60, also known as the Superstition Freeway.

Two big days of celebration of the steel guitar!! Saturday January 25th doors open at 8:00am until approximately 8:00pm, or whatever works. Saturday doors open at 8:00am till approximately 6:00 pm. We are still working out the details of the schedule, but some great talent and surprises are in store for all who attend. We have a committment from Hal Rugg to perform, and a possiblility of another Hall of Fame member, Pee Wee Whitewing from the Hank Thompson Brazos Valley Boys fame coming all the way from Louisiana. Also coming from Mississippi, Mr. Smooth, Bill Stafford with his 14 string "horizontal harp". And also a return visit from our buddy Mike Smith of Gatlin Brothers fame. Also Big Jim Barron has promised a training session on using the Band in the Box program. We are working out scheduling details, and I will post them as soon as I get it worked out. This is going to be the biggest steel show the Southwest has ever seen. NO ADMISSION CHARGE!! Donations will be accepted. We are going to have a short organizational meeting and make memberships available. Keep watching the Forum for more announcements. Lots to do to get ready, as it is only a couple of weeks away. Make plans to attend. All you steelers are welcome to bring your steels and participate in the "Round Robin" with the Band in the Box. We invite all who are interested in steel guitar music to come and play, listen, buy some CDs, whatever. But we also respectfully request players of other instruments (lead, rhythm, drums, etc) to please NOT bring your instruments. Come and enjoy two full days of fun and steel guitar. Food will be available on site. Check the phone book for motels if you need one. Thanks for all your interest!!

Terry Edwards,
It's 76 miles to AJ from where I live In Surprise, so you can get an idea from that.

Thanks Bob,

It don't look that far on a map - just on the other side of town!

I'll be there. I think I have the wife talked into getting a motel.

Steel guitars, good food, good people, a motel room with your wife --life don't get any better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bill,

I'm planning to attend. Got a call yesterday from Hal Rugg. Would like to play my guitar in case his doesn't get here. Wants a steel with the Day pedal setup. He's sure more than welcome to use mine. Will see you there.
